Café Palaver — Restaurant in Karlsruhe

This is a small Cafe with interesting art on the walls (it changes regularly), very large windows, a small play corner for children, and a pretty little outdoor courtyard. For weekends, lunch, larger groups, or outside tables, you'll want to make a reservation. Today we went for breakfast, a Wednesday morning in August. Outside was busy, but It wasn't overly-crowded yet inside the Cafe. I ordered a Cappuccino (good but a little small, coffee here comes with a nice cookie), large bowl of fruit (contained chopped up small pieces of apple, pear, watermelon, a few grapes, and one physalis. Would have liked a little larger portion and some berries for the 5 €), and a slice of Rubli-Kuchen (carrot cake.) The cakes here are consistently good! There is always a dairy-free cake choice as well. In the past we've had mostly good food and service. Lunches change daily and are always interesting and tasty, a mixture of vegan / vegetarian and meat dishes, but don't expect huge portions. Also on hot summer days it will also be hot inside the Cafe -- they need another fan or two. Overall this place is definitely worth giving a try; we come at least a few...

Bisher war ich nicht oft in Karlsruhe gewesen, sah mich daher eher zufällig nach einem Restaurant um, musste dann aber wie so oft im Leben feststellen, dass es wohl doch keine Zufälle gibt. Bei Google fand ich das Café Palaver ganz in meiner Nähe, über einen Gewerbehof mit alternativen Betrieben und Radiostation betrat ich dann das Café und wusste sofort, hier war ich vorher schon einmal gewesen und zwar vor langer Zeit. Ich wusste sogar wann, mit wem und in welchem Kontext. Es war kurz nach seiner Eröffnung am 02.Juni 1987 in Begleitung mit meinem Freund und Kollegen Alfons Kujat sowie Bommi Baumann, den wir kurz vorher auf dem "Open Ohr Festival" in Mainz aufgegabelt hatten. Alfons und ich spielten "Die Lebensbeichte des Francois Villon", Bommi betrank sich zielstrebig. Wir waren besorgt, da drei fadenscheinige Männer in einem Laden auftraten, welcher ausschließlich von Frauen geführt wurden, besonders in den Achtzigern war das ja noch eine Ausnahmeerscheinung. Aber nein, selbst der desolate Baumann wurde cool genommen (wer wissen möchte, wer diese Person war, schaue bei Wikipedia). Bis auf den später dazu gekommenen Wintergarten hat sich seitdem wenig verändert. Der sehr große und helle Gastraum mit einer Säule in der Mitte strahlt eine besondere Atmosphäre aus, merkwürdigerweise erinnert sie mich an ein altes gediegenes Wiener Café. Hat sich vielleicht doch mehr verändert als äußerlich sichtbar? Die Bedienung war aufmerksam und sehr freundlich und der Preis für das sehr gute Mittagessen, aus aussschließlich biologischen Lebenmitteln zubereitet, völlig angemessen. Es gab absolut nichts zu beanstanden, aber würde man heute noch drei abgerissene und langhaarige Vagabunden, die aus einem alten VW Bus mehr gefallen als gestiegen waren, erlauben, bei Ihnen aufzutreten und ein sehr wildes Theaterstück aufzuführen? A great place to have coffee and breakfast with friends. I personally prefer the outside seating in their beautiful patio area, but the inside is not bad at all!

Really friendly and helpful service in German and some English.

Good is tasty with decent portions, well priced for what you get. Many of my Vega friends favor this place as they have many options for them as well.

They don’t have actual ice coffee, but if you ask nicely they will make an OK version for you :)
