We recently dined at Shandiz which is just across the street from Ruby Lilly hotel. This place dishes out Persian cuisine and is very popular on both google reviews and TripAdvisor reviews, which is why we wanted to give them a try. Short story, the food is delicious at Shandiz, enough so that we ended up eating here twice.
The restaurant was busy on both weekday evenings that we stopped by. However, they were able to accommodate us both nights. For weekends, it would probably be best to make reservations here.
For our first meal, we tried and very much enjoyed the signature Kebab Mourgh and the Maitche Polo dishes. The kebab is a soft grilled chicken with spicy and citrus marinate served with saffron rice and garlic yoghurt. It was a flavourful and absolutely delicious meal. The Maitche Polo is a lamb shank, slowly cooked in a saffron sauce and served with saffron rice. This was another very tasty dish that we much enjoyed.
On our second evening, we enjoyed the Kebab Mourgh again - it was just as good the second time around. We also had a tasty Kaschkebademjan, an aubergine, garlic, mint, onion and sour cream appetiser as well as the Narendj Polo, a vegetarian selection was very good yet less preferred to the kebab dish.
In the end, we were very pleased with our two meals at Shandiz and will go out of our way to dine here again the next time we find...
Read moreSimple but tasty food. Try the dishes with pomegranate sauce for a nice combination of flavors.
First experience in a Persian restaurant, and I gotta say I liked it. We didn’t exactly know what to expect, so it took us a while to decide what to order. Since we couldn’t choose an appetizer, we went with a mixed plate which contained a small sample of different ones. Falafel, different spreads, and stuffed vine leaves (delicious) with some naan. They were all quite good, but the hummus and eggplant spread both deserve special praise.
The dishes are mostly meat based, with skewers and rice dishes available. I do remember seeing some vegan options too. I had lamb with lentils and rice, Girlfriend had falafel, and Friend had the best dish of the all, lamb with pomegranate sauce and barberry rice. In hindsight we should’ve all ordered that, because it was delicious. Very nice combination of sweet, sour and rich. Rice was fluffy and not sticky.
Dessert presented the same decision problem as appetizers, and we got the mixed platter. None were very sweet, which we liked. The saffron ice cream was refreshing but Friend thought it was a little weird. The cardamom pudding tasted a little funny, not sure what to make of it.
My only regret is not getting a dish with pomegranate sauce. Other than that I was happy with my...
Read moreWe unfortunately were let down during our visit to this restaurant as we ended up waiting 1 hour from ordering till we got our mains (kababs), and while the food was good, the wait took away from the overall experience. We visited the restaurant during a very busy thursday evening and staff was quick to take our order and bring drinks and starters but we ended up waiting about 50 minutes from when we got our starter till we got our mains. We received no communication from the staff until right before our food came. The food was good, lamb was a bit on the dry side but otherwise good. The lack of communication sadly makes this a 3-star experience. It's no problem for us to wait during rush hour and if things in the kitchen go wrong but we wish the staff had only communicated to us as people who came after us were getting their food before us. It left us wondering if they'd forgotten our order. They have a lot of classic dishes on the menu but I'd advise other people to visit during lunch where logistics might be...
