Stopped by the Viktualien market but was pretty much all closed up. Not realizing it was a Christian holiday, Ascension day, here in Germany we were unable to experience the famous market. However, the Biergarten was in full effect! Locals in traditional trachten and plain clothes alike had flocked to this central watering hole and were partying up. The vibe was semi electric and everyone was in a positive mood. The traditional brass band was playing German music and local food and beers were a plenty. We had two Local bottled heffewiessens poured into mugs and for a mid afternoon snack we grabbed a few sausages. I opted for the cheesy Kaisenbratwurst. My son went with the Bratwurst special which is a foot (or more) long brat with saurkraut and fried onions topped with mustard. The ambiance was epic.

Met friends here from overseas, they were here for the first time in Munich, sat for lunch at this place, for a taste of something traditional. We ordered the pork knuckle, the pork slices and the beef with dumplings, horseradish and slaw. The food was full of flavour and tasted delicious. Washed down with a nice cold half litre beer. Nice casual area under these huge trees, service was great, the food great and the atmosphere absolutely fantastic, do not miss this place, plenty of seating, but I presume that's why they have that many tables and seats as it tends to get busy. For Sunday lunch this was virtually the only place open at the markets and it was packed ,,, enjoy!!!

Found a place to sit down and looked at the menu for around 20 minutes. No one came to take our order even though we saw the waitress pass by a couple of times. Thought it was self service so went to pick up a couple of beers from the counter. As soon as we came back to our table, the waitress literally pounced on us and said... you have to leave this area as it is not for self service. It had started raining and the area a few feet away for the "self service" was getting pretty wet. Joanna (her name) continued to shout at us to leave and had no explanation as to why she never came to take our order when we were sitting in the "served by waiter" area. Went to complain to a "manager" and he told us that the VAT rate was different for the 2 areas i.e. "Self service" and "Served by waiter" and that is why we could not consume our beer in the latter area. That is also incorrect as the rate on beverages is the same at 19% regardless of where you consume.. Unnecessarily rude and obnoxious behavior to customers!!

The food was great and so was the atmosphere. However , we were quite disappointed in the eye-rolling and plate-tossing-service. We tried to order tea for my dad since it was still morning and it was also there on the menu, but instead of a polite "sorry we don't serve that anymore" we got "it's a biergarten, there is no tea or coffee, only beer!" Additionally the plates were tossed to us instead of being kept gently. Same was with our change when we paid. Such incidents through small, take away a lot of the positivity from an otherwise great morning. I really hope the person who served us finds happiness! Didn't seem like he enjoyed his job at all.

We went to the Biergarten while working out way through the market It's a great relaxing place to hang out, eat, and drink a beer. A couple of things to know. 1. By law you are allowed to bring outside food into any Biergarten. They just ask that you buy the beer there. If you bring food in only sit at the tables/benches without table clothes. Tables with table clothes are for food service. 2. Many places in and around the Biergarten take cash only. We purchased leberkase sandwiches from across the street, brought them over and bought some beer. It was very relaxing!

This bustling biergarten offers a great selection of local beers and an authentic Bavarian experience in Munich. I highly recommend trying the massive pretzels with Obatzda (Bavarian cream cheese); a perfect combination with a cold beer on tap. Expect to pay around €5-8 for a pretzel and €4-6 per beer. Service is average and can take time during peak hours. However the lively atmosphere in the heart of Munich makes it a fantastic place to relax and enjoy some local flavour. It’s also ideal that they are open on Sundays, when the rest of the market is closed.
