We recently visited Munich and had two very good meals at Zwickl am Viktualienmarkt. We had read very positive reviews for this place on google reviews and at TripAdvisor so wanted to check them out during our visit. In short, the high remarks seem warranted.
During our two meals we had the meat balls (duck breast) twice. This was a fantastic dish, meat balls were well-prepared and packed with flavour. Served with a delicious sauce, we both really enjoyed this dish. We also liked the signature meat balls (beef and pork) but slightly less than the duck meat balls.
We also tried the Beef Goulash served with Bavarian noodles. This was a good goulash, a bit spicy with a touch of sour cream. While good, it was less preferred to the delicious meat ball dishes at Zwickl.
Notably, the dishes were served beautifully with herbs and garnishes to give more colour and aesthetic appeal (see pictures).
There is a small section of indoor seating at Zwickl. Best to make reservations there if you want to dine at peak times. Outdoor seating is more accessible for walk-in guests.
In the end, we very much liked our lunch an dinner at Zwickl and would gladly return during future visits to Munich for...
Read moreThe food was generous and good, altough the Kasespatzle was blander than I expected. The problem for us was the service - the waiter was borderline rude. My mom asked if they had real Coke and he answered something in a mocking way like "no, we're in Germany" so they only had that Fritz Cola (that she doesn't like because it tastes like flat Coke). He kept speaking German to us although we apologetically said we only spoke French or English. I also "dared" to ask for tap water and it was a categorical "no" as well, so we paid 6.20 EUR for a 75cl bottle of water, and suprise, we saw after on the menu that there was actually tap water that was still expensive but less than the mineral water. The restaurant is in a very touristic spot but it felt like they didn't like tourists and we were just 4 Canadian women, probably not the worst guests...
Read moreEscaping the madness of the Viktualienmarkt, we wondered down an alley way for some lunch and beer. Wow. The goat cheese and herb salad was so wonderful, I would literally go out of my way to have this again. So simple and so well done! If you are looking to escape the meat fiesta this delightful dish will leave you smiling for sure. Paired with some beer and you are good for another long day of walking.
There is more on the menu than just this salad - pleat of meats and other vegetarian dishes are also available as well as desserts, a good selection of beer and wine. Outdoor and indoor seating to your desires....
