Chrisostomos was recommended by our hotel staff and a few tour guides for authentic Cretan cuisine. We enjoyed the food here a lot, though found some dishes to be a little mild in flavor for our taste. My wife and I ordered the fava, snails, dakos, and the special lamb with handmade pasta. The quality of the ingredients here is high and everything tastes quite fresh. We specifically found the dakos and the lamb pasta in need of some additional seasoning, but had no complaints about the cookery (i.e. deliciously tender meat and chewy pasta for the lamb dish and good quality ingredients on the dakos).
Special mention should be made for the homemade, wood fired sourdough bread they prepare here. It is incredibly fresh (even during dinner service) with a tender crumb and rustically crisp crunch. It exceeded the quality of the bread I’ve had at more “upscale” restaurants in Athens and elsewhere. Additionally, as per Cretan tradition we received complimentary dessert and raki at the end of the meal. The dessert here is lukumades (Greek donuts), and the fritters were hot, crispy, and delicious with the perfect amount of honey and sesame topping.
Reservations are a must for peak dinner hours. I also recommend dining here as early as possible, as their specialty dishes tend to run out as the night progresses. Our service here was pleasant and efficient. Our bill total (including a drink) was just under 40 euro for 2 people and we could have easily packed a meal’s worth of leftovers if we were not leaving the next day. Chrisostomos is definitely worth checking out if you want to experience real Cretan fare and a more authentic...
Read moreI cannot give a higher rating to this place even though the food was really good, but the service really spoiled our whole experience. It started well with a very nice waiter who listened and helped us in our selections. But it went downhill after that. We had specifically requested that our main dish not be served before we had finished our appetizers, and the waiter told us he would personally make sure of it. Well, that didn't work out as planned... we were barely halfway through our appetizers when we were presented with the main course. They corrected their error, but after this "incident" we never saw our waiter again. Or rather, we saw him running around between three different areas of the restaurant: outside on the street, in the patio where we were, and inside. Seemed like poor restaurant management to have a waiter covering so much territory instead of concentrating on one area. The other unpleasant experience is that we were seated at a table by the outside door; it was very cold outside and several staff members kept the door open for a very long time right behind my back while they were talking to people outside. We asked if they could close the door more promptly, but they kept doing it. No complaints about the food, I am no expert in traditional Greek/Cretan food, but everything was tasty and the portions generous. At the end of the meal, we were treated with freshly made loukoumades and a generous serving of Metaxa. Had to wait a very long time to get a waiter's attention to get the bill, but we eventually managed. There are so many choices of restaurants in Chania, I wouldn't...
Read moreOur culinary journey at Christostomos in Chania was nothing short of exceptional. Renowned for its traditional Cretan cuisine and adorned with well-deserved awards, the restaurant truly lived up to its reputation. We began our feast with a tantalizing appetizer of fried snails, olives, and bread, a delicious introduction to the rich flavors of the region.
For our main course, we indulged in the sinfully good pork belly, its succulent tenderness a testament to the culinary mastery of the chef. The octopus, accompanied by Greek pasta in a delightful sauce, was a symphony of flavors that left our taste buds dancing with delight. Each dish showcased the freshness of the ingredients and the skillful execution of traditional recipes.
To cap off our unforgettable meal, we were treated to a complimentary dessert of freshly fried fritters drizzled with luscious local honey, a sweet finale that perfectly balanced the savory delights of our lunch. And what better way to toast to a memorable dining experience than with a sip of raki, elevating our enjoyment to new heights.
