We arrived at the restaurant at 9:30pm (after sunset) hoping to have wine and several seafood appetizers. After placing our initial order (house wine, calamari, Greek salad), the waitress looked at us and said “you have to order dinner to sit here — you can’t just have snacks”. We were planning to order more food after our initial round, so we asked what she meant (i.e., is there a minimum spend per table or do we need to order entrees instead of appetizers) but she walked away without responding. She came back to tell us that we had to order more food or leave, but she was still unable to articulate what exactly she meant by “more food” and was insistent that we order more before any food/drinks arrived.
No problem — happy to leave. As we prepared to leave, the American hostess stuck her head out of the back to say “we’re just serving dinner, we can’t do snacks — we don’t have enough tables”. No one else was arriving and there were other open tables. This exchange essentially confirmed that the poor hospitality wasn’t a cultural or language barrier.
Our experience was the same as several other reviews where the waitstaff pushed food on diners.
Sounds like the consistent good thing about this place is the sunset — not the food or the hospitality. You can get good sunset, view, and hospitality up the hill without the stairs or the risk of food poisoning on your holiday.
Two thoughts: 1) be able to clearly articulate any “food order requirements”, 2) don’t turn away people who arrive after sunset to a “sunset view” restaurant with several...
Read moreAmazing food, location and service!!! The restaurants at Amoudi Bay usually require a prior reservation, but Dimitris allowed us a walk in for lunch time. (But would recommend a reservation if you are visiting it for sunset.) We got a table overlooking the sea, it was a very romantic setting indeed! For appetisers we ordered the fried calamari which was crisp not chewy at all and extremely fresh, accompanied with a tasty dip. We also ordered the grilled prawns, size of the prawns was decently huge and were very juicy in texture. For the main course we ordered the Seafood linguine with an option of creamy pink sauce, a mix of red and white, it was utterly delicious and had a mix of octopus, mussels, prawns, and clams. The entire meal went great with the Assytriko white wine, a local wine made from white grapes found only in Santorini, which was suggested to us by the staff. She was even courteous enough to click a few pictures of us with the beautiful backdrop. The seafood was very fresh and all the preparations were tasty. One may find the price range a little on the upper side compared to the portion size, but the location and the freshness of the seafood is worth the money. For us it indeed was one of the most romantic, spectacular, beautiful restaurants we have dined at! A very calm, peaceful setting...
Read moreBest sunset view of the the 3 restaurants on Ammoudi Bay! We ate at 2 of the 3 and walked through the seating area of the other one, so I feel confident in definitively making that statement. Also, this is going to seem irrelevant to people who have never been to Ammoudi Bay on a summer evening, but Dimitris has fans running! The fans definitely enhanced the enjoyment factor because you can actually feel comfortable in what is otherwise a sweltering environment. If your ability to handle the heat is at all a concern, this may tip the scales in favor of Dimitris for you. As for the food, it was good. I thought the dishes from the other restaurant we dined at on the bay the night before were better overall, but Dimitris was still very enjoyable. Dishes prepared in a simple way allow you to taste the freshness and flavors of the seafood. We had the grilled snapper and the simple seasoning complemented the flavor from the grill nicely. The rest of the meal was good, but not anything really memorable. Service was slow even by Santorini standards and it was difficult to get an order in as well as pay for the bill at the end. Bottom line: be prepared to pay up but understand that you are paying for the view as much as the meal. If you go in with that understanding, you’ll have a...
