Was recommended Rincon Típico by many blogs and backpackers and we were not disappointed. One thing I enjoy most about backpacking is eating with the locals and this is definitely the place to do it in Antigua. We ordered the roasted chicken plate and pepian soup. The chickens were roasted in a giant fire pit at the front of the restaurant. Tacos were made at the front entrance. Chicken was roasted perfectly with great seasoning and was super juicy. The roasted potatoes were THE BOMB. We've all had roasted potatoes before but these were hands down the best. The salad was your basic house salad but had a nice creamy dressing on it. The pepian soup was like a Mayan curry if I had to explain it. It had many roasted ground up spices and a mix of local vegetables stewed in it with chicken. It was nice to try one of their national dishes (pepian soup), and this was the place to try it, but I was a bit let down to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I love my spices, but I think it had too much cinnamon in it for my liking. This doesn't change my rating of this place at all though. It still gets 5 stars from me. Plastic lawn chairs and tables with plastic covering up top but this is the local joint what else do you expect! We got two roasted chicken dinners, the pepian soup, cervezas and free pour of their corn based drink (super refreshing) for 100QT.

For Q.30 you can get any of their plates from their lunch/dinner menu. They offer a selection of chicken, sausage, pepian, stew, vegetarian plate, etc. and a dish of the day. The entree is served with 2 sides of their choice (though I'm sure you could ask for a specific side if they have it available), 2 freshly made tortillas, and a drink. The horchata has free refills. Breakfast is offered for about Q.20-25. For this price you can't help but want to return. You can see the kitchen from the dining area which is always a nice touch. Customer service is decent, and though it may not be up to par with foreign tourists' standards, it certainly isn't bad. The bathrooms are clean too, which is always a plus. My only complaint is that the tables and benches are wobbly (due to the natural stone floor, not the actual tables and chairs) and that the benches are barely big enough to fit 2 people comfortably. I only saw 2 tables that could accommodate a larger group. The doors are kept open so a couple birds came to pick at our scraps when we were done 😊.

I had to balance my rating with 5 for taste of food and price, to 1 for everything else! Let me just start by saying that the food was Awesome! And let me wrap that with, if you have traveled abroad extensively then you get that food is not always handled the same in all places / countries. I have traveled enough to accept the fact that food is not handle the same outside the US. And, that good $4 plate of food comes with potential health risk. The birds were cute until their play basket became my bread basket (waiter didn’t change it out or anything; he just grab it off the other table, grab my bread with his hand and put it in there!) The food (chicken, slaw in a cilantro dressing that was very good, and seasoned potatoes) was extremely good and on only four usd! I couldn’t with the bread though. I tried to bring myself up to the challenged, but I just couldn’t.

Most locals will refer to this restaurant as "Rincon típico", despite what the sign and Google says. It has the best typical Guatemalan food and it costs 35Q. Usually you have to wait in a line (sometimes inside, sometimes on the street, sometimes on the other side of the street). You order at a window and are given a number to take to your table. All lunches come with 2 tortillas, whatever you choose as your main dish, and some form of sweet drink depending on the day. The two most popular dishes I see people eating most are "pollo a la linea" and "estofado de 3 carnes". My favorite is the pollo a la linea. I tried many of the more upscale "Guatemalan food" places in town that often cost 2-3x what this place charges. None of them ever got close to being as good. It's hard to beat this place if you are looking for traditional Guatemalan food at a good price.

A locals restaurant that is frequented by tourists. A nice mix of clientele that speaks to quality and value. The menu is typical local cuisine. We went here on a friend's recommendation from her visit years ago which speaks to consistency. The process is a very efficient system where you order from the counter, find a table and receive your food quite quickly. When we arrived I thought finding a table was going to be difficult but after ordering and turning around the staff had turned over a few tables with incredible efficiency. The food was good and plentiful, set menu style that includes a drink. The daily menu changes throughout the week. There is always wood fired rotisserie chicken available as well as sausages. Handmade tortillas are included in the meal. Its open 8am to 4pm so no dinner hours.

About $30 q for a simple brekky which includes eggs your way (soft medium) and a small beans soup and some fresh tortillas the woman who makes it in front (make sure to tip her on the way out!) and an atol drink (they add sugar to it Fyi) . The ambience is nice, the birds come to collect scraps when you walk away and it’s a peaceful location to get your morning bearings. I feel the eggs could be bigger but it’s a good price for Antigua. You get a little tiny fried plantain sweet too- rather tiny but I’m not a huge anything in oil fan so it’s enough. You pay upfront and get a number and take a seat and they’ll bring your food to you. Seems like a very local place so I support that. Always support local Guatemala!
