Read moreWhen in town we always stop at Alex's artfully quirky restaurant just off of Antigua's central plaza facing the cathedral.
The first thing you'll notice after settling in is the variety of high-quality paintings on the wall. Some of them are painted by Alex himself, and all of them have a story- just ask!
The menu is varied and interesting, I love the steaks and some of the pastas but there is a creativity and eye for interesting flavors that stands out. There are a variety of meat, seafood, and pasta dishes, as well as unusual appetizers.
Alex is one of the main draws as a person, and if it's not too busy he will take time to regale you with hilarious stories and fascinating tidbits. You may notice one of his semi-autobiographical adventure books laying around- ask him about them! He provides great entertainment for a couple or a group, and sometimes in the back room there is live music as well. The front room can be reserved in its entirety for a larger group, and the restaurant works well for entertaining groups, just let them know ahead of time.
No visit to Sobremesa would be complete without a sampling of some of their famous ice cream- an absolute highlight! If you can get Alex to do his full presentation of the flavors available that day, do it. Sobremesa also has a standalone desert stand around the corner (to the right) where you can pick up ice cream during the day. Some of the flavors are so inventive and original, I wouldn't want to spoil them here, and if you have a group, it's a lot of fun to pick different flavors and sample them all.
Sobremesa is brimming with personality and creativity. You...
Read moreAt the final day of our stay in Antigua, the girlfriend and I ventured out to the city in search of a semi-fancy dinner to celebrate my birthday. We had one promising seafood restaurant on our sights, but sadly we were out of any cash, dollars or quetzales, and so we had to walk out since they wouldn't take Visa cards. To makes things worse, it started pouring. We were madly looking for anything that would be at least half decent. We had no such luck. Our potential picks had either closed or ceased to exist. But after crossing the plaza and being almost completely soaked wet, we happened to run into the first place that offered refuge. We had planned to continue searching for our other picks, but after having one look at the menu, I fell in love.
What I presume was one of the owners greeted us and welcomed us in. We decided to sit near the front as I quite enjoy the sound of rain and the faint smell of petrichor. Beautiful room. It was filled with books, interesting paintings, tables with tempting wine bottles and the charm of old couples chatting in the other tables. I had the chicken breast with banana and jalapeño sauce and she had the chiltepe linguini (which I ended up finishing as she is full quite easily). They were exquisite.
I would love to return to this amazing place with the intent of going for the best of the best they have to offer. It was quite sad to limit our choices on our student budgets. Still, worth it. Loved the experience. Recommend it to anyone...
