I’ve been to Antigua 5-6 times now and el barrio is always my go to for drinks and a night out on the town. It’s a really cool place with a 3-4 different bars that share the same courtyard. Music is always bumping. Weekends are jam packed! Get there around 8pm if you want to secure a good spot at one of the tables. Lots of locals with a mix of tourists/backpackers. So it’s definitely not a tourist trap. The fish bowls are always a crowd favorite upstairs at lava terrace. My favorite though doesn’t have to do with the drinks, but the FOOD! The chicken wings!! the front bar is a sports bar with soccer matches playing. inside the courtyard there are two bars with a third (very cute jungle themed bar) tucked away to the side. then you can head upstairs to the large rooftop and find a 5th bar.
we went on a thursday night, which was busy but not overcrowded. also had no creepy interactions (bonus!) with any men, and the bartenders were all super friendly.
only thing i hated was they did not enforce the no smoking in the patio rule despite the signs...

My wife and I were insulted and actually physically pushed by the female manager of the place at the door simply for asking a simple clarification question regarding some documents that were being asked from us to enter the place. We had been there the night before without issues (no documents were being asked then) and had a great time. Will not go back simply because of her. Even the security guy felt bad and actually apologized to us but said he was unable to do anything as the manager was the one was the one being super rude...
