The positives: the food here is very good, creative dishes but not too pretentious, very well executed, very well selected wine (we had the less expensive ones by the glass and they were all very good).
The not so positive: they really don't know how to deal with time here. We told our waiter when we sat down that we're in a hurry so two of us will order appetisers before the others arrive, to which he said the kitchen is taking some time to prepare orders, but then when the others arrived and ordered main courses directly for some reason he didn't put the orders through?? He only came and asked 20mins later if he should put the main courses through?? What? First of all three of us had no appetisers so there was ZERO issue serving them the main courses directly. But especially when you know we're in a hurry and your kitchen is slow, why on earth would you wait that long?? Then when they finally did arrive after about 45mins one main course was missing, and the other had an insect in it. The missing main course arrived more than an hour after my niece ordered it... The manager came out and said as compensation the drinks will be free, which would have been nice enough compensation that I would've still left a 5 star review possibly, but then after we ordered 2-3 more drinks as a result, when he served the bill suddenly he said only the first round of drinks was free? This is as good as not offering any compensation at all because now we ordered more drinks we had to pay for which we didn't think we would! So our bill came out pretty expensive still, for a meal that was from a service point of view, pretty much a disaster... in our home country the compensation would've been much bigger for such bad errors, maybe even the meal completely free.
Also very disappointing for me - the restaurant popped up for me in a Google advertisemet when I was searching for the best gluten free restaurants in Budapest, but it turned out it's really not a good restaurant if you eat gluten free or have any allergies... the fact I eat no gluten or milk meant 95% of the dishes were unavailable for me and I was forced to eat two dishes which were vegan, all the meat and fish dishes have either gluten or milk or both. You can do better than that, at least be able to offer an...
Read moreWe recently went on a trip to Budapest. While we were there, we had the chance to visit a place called Tati which prides itself on a farm to table concept. The people who run the restaurant also take care of the farm where the produce comes from.
I've heard of it before, but was also recommended the place by the Airbnb host whose flat we stayed at.
I was hoping to try some authentic Hungarian food and this place delivered. If you are in Budapest and you want to try authentic goulash/ beef soup then you can't go far wrong trying it here.
Our server was great. He recommended some great cocktails. One being a negroni that was one of the nicest I have tried. It had a burnt orange element to it with a sprig of rosemary. Lush!
The restaurant is open plan with a huge bar in the middle where they prepare drinks and run the service from.
The staff are confident and witty which makes a great accompaniment to the main event....the food!
We were given some fresh sourdough bread and after demolishing that and the goulash we were served two portions of Chicken Paprikash which came with something I've never tried before called nokedli which are fluffy Hungarian egg noodle dumplings. They go so well with the Paprika flavoured chicken. Apparently there is a similar version made in Germany called Spätzle.
They have 6 or 7 different versions of the national drink Palinka. I tried a grape based one and Tone a cherry flavour one. You are supposed to sip it instead of necking the whole thing. It is strong, well these ones were at 50% alcohol. It's a bit much for me but there were some subtly nice flavours in there...it's like a fruit brandy. Well worth trying at least once!
Everywhere in Budapest seems to employ string quartets to entertain their customers and it's no different at Tati. We would have stayed out longer to enjoy the music, but we had a flight to catch early the next morning but it was a great way to finish our Christmas holiday in Hungary and I would highly recommend if you are in the area visiting this...
