Reykjavik Kitchen is a great little place that blends a lot of flavors across its dishes. Sometimes this is highly successful approach but sometimes I felt the chef might be better off rolling back the complexity and letting fewer accents allow the underlying proteins and vegetables in the dish to shine through a bit more. Firstly, it’s a cozy restaurant, with lots of tables in a small space. Busy but not overly so on a Sunday night. The décor is modern and pleasant. The service staff are superb, friendly and professional, they are attentive at the right level. Hear hear! I started with lamb carpaccio. Large in size (all portions are generous indeed), the lamb itself was gorgeous and was accompanied by arugula, pistachio, a touch of red jam, and grana Padano. The favour combination was spot on. The only criticism was that the ingredients were simply piled on top of the lamb rather messily. They could have used half of the salad that was on top to no detriment. It tasted great but first visual impression seemed of haste to get it onto the table. I followed this with their seafood soup, lobster and mussel base with whit whitefish tomato, saffron and dill oil. This was indeed exquisite. It had a lobster bisque consistency and with a concentration of flavors that was perfect. This dish stole the show. For mains I choose the panfried cod. The cod itself was perfectly cooked, moist flaking. Served on baby potatoes and puree of sweet potato, those were fine as well. There was though a heavy handedness with basil pesto and mandarin glaze as well as arugula flakes. This combination may have worked if it was lightly applied but there was simply too much going on in this dish – my palate did not know what to make of it. Ultimately, I brushed most of that aside and stuck with the fish itself. All of this makes for a challenging review – I love he place, the feel, the service and the food. My advice is to choose carefully as the flavorings are not subtle. I’d go back and select the simpler dishes next time around. Overall, though, hats off to a great dinner and a great night out...
Read more5/5 for quality, service, experience, ambience. I cannot stress enough how impressed we were with everything. I wanted to try everything but I settled on the coffee cured salmon with mascarpone and orange glaze, really authentic and novel starter. The bread rolls and butter while you wait is also quite remarkable; could hardly stop myself! Then my main was the baked sweet potatoes with cashews, chickpeas and coconut sauce. The waiter brought me the cod instead, by accident. I went up to let him and he was so kind and apologetic about it, he let me "try it" on the house, knowing that my original dish was on the way. It eventually came and there I was with two extremely delicious main meals - not seen in the pictures here. To top it all off was the chocolate cake, though I was originally down for the vanilla ice cream with the "chocolate ash". Perfect to share after what I can only describe as a meal for KINGS. Don't even think about calories because January in Reykjavik means that you need to top up on them anyway! So enjoy the warm and pleasant vibe, any and every delicious meal that is beautifully served in a chic environment, with 80s classics in the background. I tipped Daniel because apart from serving us the best food we've had in the city, he made sure we had a great dining experience from the moment he let us in to the moment we were out. Do book if you don't want to stand by the door for ages, though. We had booked so it wasn't a problem but, it's definitely worth planning in advance as it gets...
Read moreThis restaurant is awesome! We paid around 150 Euro for two people and both had three courses. For drinks we only got one draft beer and one capuchino. Water was complimentary. If this is an acceptable price range you can expect a superior dining experience. We booked in advance which is probably necessary on most evenings and were met by a friendly yet professional staff. We selected a starter and a main course. We received complimentary, very cute looking small bread loafs with a creamy herbal butter which was an amazing appetizer. The starter was delivered fresh made within a few minutes. The food was exceptionally good and we enjoyed every single bite. The staff was very attentive without being intrusive and our table was cleared soon after we finished the starter and the main was delivered soon after. The starter had set a high bar and the main was of the same high quality. The plates carrying the food were casual and rustic and the food was arranged to please the eye. It simply tasted fantastic. We decided we had space for dessert and once again we were impressed how tasty and good looking the food was. Overall an amazing dining experience, we highly recommend Reykjavik Kitchen to anyone looking for a local high quality meal served in a friendly environment and we hope to come...
