📍 Iceland | The Best Lamb Soup Ever! 🐏

*I got here about 40 minutes prior to closing so I didn't mark down for certain things* Warning, you must climb a flight of narrow stairs to get to this. When I arrived the host came over and looked irritated that I was there (even though there were several tables filled with people). She did not say hello, she greeted me by saying "We're out of the meat soup, there's only vegetarian" I said that would be fine. "It's curried ginger vegetable". She seemed like she was trying to get me to say no. Anyway I sat and was given a cute little table with a street view which was nice. The soup came out quickly (it's premade, they just ladle into a bread bowl). The soup was hot and it was delicious. I was thinking it would be a chunky soup but it was like a puree. The bread bowl was very tasty and didn't seem stale the way it can be at places. They also give you the bread portion they cut out of the middle with a side of butter, so that was a nice touch. I did think the price was a little high (even by Icelandic standards), but it was ok, the food was good. I had water with my dinner and I ended up having to take my glass up to the counter to have it refilled, again the lady seemed irritated that I asked for a refill and sighed at me. She literally just had to turn and fill the glass from the tap behind her. Most places I've been had bottles of water at the table.

We visited here on a late night having just arrived to Iceland and being hungry and tired. They were open and there weren't many people left due to the hour. When we arrived, an American group left the building and told us it's not worth it because "they only have vegetarian food left". Nothing wrong with vegetarian food. In fact, it can be quiet delicious, so I don't know why they thought we'd be uninterested. It turns out that because of the late hour, there was only one food option left. A mexican vegetable cream soup. We ordered it and a drink and thought the price was good considering what the costs in Icelands are. And it was absolutely delicious. In fact, I wish I had the recipe so I could cook it myself. Served in a big bread, it turned out to be the perfect meal for tired and hungry travellers. Light, healthy and special. The atmosphere was cosy and quiet, we could look out on the street and just enjoy the time there. The staff were very friendly as well. Can definitely recommend this place, especially if you need a late little meal.

Svarta Kaffið is a super famous restaurant located right in the heart of Reykjavik, Iceland. It’s very convenient, and when we visited, we didn’t have to wait for a table. Most people order the bread soup, which is essentially soup served in a bread bowl, with options for vegetable or meat broth. I have to say, the portion sizes are huge—two people can easily share one! We noticed that most diners couldn’t finish their soup. Besides the soup, the bread is quite filling as well. The soup itself is tasty, but the bread has a very hard crust, which is necessary to hold the soup. You can tear off pieces of the bread to soak in the soup, and it’s delicious when the bread absorbs all the broth. However, if you eat the bread alone, it can be a bit tough. The bread soup is a unique experience and definitely worth trying. Just be aware that the portion is substantial and might leave you too full for another meal!

This is our second time eating at this restaurant and it does not disappoint. A soup restaurant serving 2 types of soup, rotating daily and today, they were serving a potato and leek soup, along with a lamb soup. On our first visit to this establishment, there was some beef or lamb soup along with a vegetarian option, barley, I believe it was. And we had these two soups paired with a hot chocolate (which looks like an extremely cold milkshake), and they were all superb. 10/10 for all 3. And as for today, as stated previously, we had the two house specials and they didn’t disappoint. The potato and leek had a very licorice-like taste, but it was still delicious. As for the lamb soup, it was my personal favorite. A meaty soup that was just so tasty! This restaurant is so good! I 100% recommend, and there’s always a new surprise each visit!

We simply got lucky. Stumbled into this place after seeing the “hot soup” sign outside and it sounded good. Little did we know that we had accidentally hit upon one of the highest rated restaurants in Reykjavik! (Check it out on Yelp and numerous other sites!) Small English-style pub with a good beer selection, including Guinness on tap and some local brews. Their claim to fame? Simple: just 2 big cauldrons of hot soup on the bar that is served in bread bowls! Flavors change daily. We had potato and lamb/beef chili. Excellent flavors, plenty of food and an active, friendly atmosphere. We actually spoke to a couple seated next to us from the UK. Prices are about 2.750 ISK per soup and two can eat and have a beer for about 8.000 ISK- and depart full and warm. Warning: can get busy. Plan ahead. Great place, we will return!
