Read moreOn the edge as it was previously called, has recently rebranded to ASEAN - on the edge. The restaurant is on the 13th floor in Barton centre and is one of the most beautiful candlelit restaurants in the city. What I love about the food here is that it’s not mainstream pan Asian with Chinese and Japanese taking the spotlight away from less known but delicious delicacies from other south east Asian countries. For some of the dishes I literally got up from my chair and did a little dance. I love what ASEAN has done with their menu and I am definitely going to become a regular here. The dishes that won my heart were: The banana flower salad which was crunchy yet soft. I couldn’t believe that banana flower could actually taste like that!! The hint of rice wine and the garlic was brilliant. The nonya butter crunchy soft shell crab - ok I am mildly allergic to crab but a bite here and there doesn’t hurt. So when our host recommended it I was tempted to take a bite. This dish is just so easy to eat without all the struggle and mess that comes with eating crab and it’s simply delicious. I couldn’t stop myself from eating it and they also make this dish with prawns or calamari. The chiang mai risotto was something I managed to polish off my plate even though I was feeling quite full with the appetisers and entrees. It was the most delicate balance of flavours with wonderful hints of lemongrass, coriander, coconut and lime. The texture was so creamy it’s definitely one of the best Risottos I’ve ever tasted. Malacca curry with roti jala - first off I like how pretty the roti jala looks and how delicate it’s texture is. The malacca curry was simply the best compliment to the crisp but delicate roti jala crepe’s. I loved the cocktails we had. You must try their penicillin and sangria. Some of my other recommendations would be the Burmese khaoswe, nasi goreng, and the tofu mushroom & broccoli satay. For our drinks we ordered the penicillin, Please specify if to your host if you would like sharper flavours. The staff were very warm and friendly. Service is prompt and I had no complaints whatsoever. I can’t wait to take my folks here as they love pan Asian cuisine...
