I flew in from Delhi with a visit to the "revamped Sienna" high up on my to-do list. As an ardent fan of the older version, I was eager to see how the place had evolved. While my previous experiences were better, the new version did not disappoint.
I visited on the evening of January 1st, so naturally, there was a 30-minute wait for a table. Once seated, we were looked after by a delightful and attentive server. He consistently checked in on us, ensuring everything was smooth, and thoughtfully recommended some bestsellers from the "new" menu.
The revamped menu is a bold shift from its predecessor, and the theme seemed more like "Bengal Meets the World." It offered a fusion of traditional Bengali dishes influenced by global culinary practices. The thought and creativity behind each dish was apparent—carefully crafted by the chefs. I am certain they must've spent a lot of conceptualising these new dishes.
I tried the prawns with hollandaise sauce and the fish oil dolma, and both were pretty stellar. The plating was impeccable, akin to what you’d expect at a 5-star establishment. The flavors struck a perfect balance—evoking the warmth of homely Bengali food while also aligning with modern cosmopolitan tastes. My only complaint would be with the portion sizes: they were rather small for the high price point. However, I understand that "art & creativity" comes at a premium cost.
We ended the meal with a modern version of doodh pooli drizzled with pandan oil—perfectly sweetened and delightfully soft. My hunch: the dishes may not appeal to everyone, as they seem tailored more for a Gen Z audience who might have a taste for fusion cuisine. However, I encourage everyone to try the food at least once.
The revamped interiors exude a rustic, old charm, though I personally preferred the interiors of the previous Sienna. The warm service, unique dishes, and overall ambience made for a memorable experience, even if the prices leaned on a slightly higher side. Also: the current font size on the menu is a bit too small & the font style isn't the most readable. Perhaps that can be improved?
The store on the ground floor is worth a visit as well, offering a range of food and clothing items. I picked up some date palm jaggery, which was of excellent quality.
If you’re in the area, I can recommend dropping by. I hope that the diligent creators working hard at Sienna read my review and...
Read moreHow do I say this? The most disappointed visit to any cafe/restrauant ever. The cafe cum store is located inside hindusthan park and finding it is a time consuming task. Well when it comes to my review.. I look for 7 things from a cafe/restrauant : Food Presentation Service Ambience Seating arrangement Price Hygiene factor Considering it this is supposed to be a 0 star visit. And one more thing you guys are charging such a amount.. Please have a curated menu rather than written all over the black board and all over the place a person won't have that much patience to look all around to find out what he/she likes to eat. Let's come to the food : We ordered : • CTC masala tea : a normal masala tea from a local vendor taste much better. • Latte : taste as bad as CCD's and the latte art was faded • Mushroom & Cheese Sandwich : My 8 year old cousin makes much better sandwich , well that's apart a small portion of sandwich (probably 3x3 inch brown bread) and yes the sandwich tasted stale, the capsicum was basically dipped in vineger or was stale couldn't make out.. there was hardly any trace of cheese .. it was just cheese flakes sprinkled on top that's it, it costed Rs.225 are you people kidding me the potato chips it was served with was the saving grace. After having these we didn't have courage to order anything else as I was not confident enough to gamble my hard earned money. • Now to the presentation : It was below average. • The service : It was prompt and fast but the staff seemed as if they are busy with there things or as if they have been adviced not to interact with the customers. • Ambience : The ambience was photograph friendly and it is actually good but ambience doesn't feed you. • Seating arrangements : cluttered at best. • Price : Okay I can agree the price can be steep but at least provide the quality and quantity in ratio to the price. • Hygiene factor : I ve no qualms about the Hygiene factor. I understand my review is very harsh, I will and give as honest review as possible. Over all I m dissatisfied and disappointed. Verdict : Strongly NOT...
Read moreVisited Sienna Calcutta on 1/10/25, recently ranked the 6th best restaurant in India, I arrived with high expectations, eager to experience its much-spoken culinary philosophy that celebrates regional ingredients with a contemporary lens.
The evening began on a troubling note with the Aloo Kalimpong Cheese Momo. A strand of hair nestled inside the momo forced an immediate return to the kitchen. To the restaurant’s credit, it was replaced swiftly, but such an incident at a place of this standing is alarming and difficult to dismiss. The Mangsho Bhuna Khichuri with Paya Shorba showcased comforting flavors in the broth, yet the kachumbar served alongside (served on the same plate) was unmistakably rotten. When pointed out, it elicited nothing more than a cursory apology, without the courtesy of a replacement. Such indifference reflects poorly on a restaurant of this stature. The Murgir Dim er Scotch Egg was technically competent, its yolk perfectly runny, though it lacked soul. The Ghugni with Duck Leg Confit was unbearably salty, overwhelming rather than nuanced. Worse still, the Burmese-style Ilish Roast with Tulaipanji Sticky Rice served with hilsa was simply not fresh, though the rice itself was fragrant .
Desserts fared better. The Doodh Puli was a faithful rendition, and while the Chocolate Fondant simple, the Kacha Lonka Ice Cream was extraordinary—vivid, daring, and the highlight of the meal.
Sienna Calcutta is a restaurant of great ambition, but ambition alone cannot excuse lapses in quality, hygiene, and consistency. When ranked among the best in the nation, such oversights are not merely disappointing—they are unacceptable. For now, Sienna dazzles in atmosphere but falters on the plate.
Honestly, the real stars of Sienna aren’t in the kitchen but in the PR office. To take average dishes, questionable freshness, and even a stray hair in a momo, then still land a “Top 6 in India” title—now that’s Michelin-level...
