I found this place through Google Maps and had been looking forward to trying the jackfruit rendang all day when I came in the evening at about 8pm. I liked that there was no MSG used and that they cooked with coconut oil.
The restaurant was at about half capacity and it looked like everyone had been served, but I could still hear cooking in the back so maybe not. I was not greeted because the server was not paying attention (or maybe they were understaffed), so I had to stand there for a few minutes before the server came out with a drink for another table.
My kombucha came quickly (it was ok, nothing to write home about), but I waited over a half hour for my food.
I found it lacking in flavor and very dissimilar to a rendang. The presentation was not exciting either, but I won't fault them for that. I ended up leaving half of it behind because I did not care for the taste and I very rarely do that as I'm not a picky eater. I love jackfruit so I was very surprised I did not like it.
I don't know why this warung has such good reviews, but maybe their other dishes are better. I wouldn't know, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and an extra star for that. The prices are also inexpensive so I don't regret trying this place.
This next point may not be a problem for people, but I find the seating situation to be very odd. There are 4 long rectangular tables that seat between 4-6 people minimum. While I was there, there were at least 3 single diners and a couple, so we all had to share and shuffle around to accommodate each other.
Overall a very strange...
Read moreWe just did what we thought would be "another cooking class" as our 9 year old is a mini foodie and seems to love them. Well, today was not that. Today, we turned up at 10am and chose a 3 course menu from anything off Puspa's menu and wall, and as a mum and 9 year old daughter, we were immediately put to work on creating the yummiest local food I've ever eaten. We made corn fritters, chicken satay and Dadar Gulung (pandan pancakes) ... we also immediately felt like family, as you'll not meet someone like Puspa often. She has a stunning smile, and extremely warm personality. Also I should mention, she allowed us to make all our options normal AND gluten free; as the co-parent is coeliac. She understands Gluten Free, vegan and lots of dietary requirements extremely well.
If it was up to my daughter, I'd be giving 100 Stars, but as 5 is the most I can give, 5 stars for the Pusma warung is very deserving.
Cooking class goes for 2-3 hours, from 10am - booked from the day before - it can even be done sitting down. The ingredients were super fresh and tasty, and Pusma's English is great, and she's awesome with kids.
Minimum 2 people, and it was rp250,000 ($25 AUD) per person.
My favourite part is knowing I learnt simple enough recipes, that I'll definitely be able to recreate the meals again... they were sooo good!!! The corn fritters and chicken satay with sambal matah were absolutely 10/10 delicious.
Highly recommend as both a Cooking class and a tasty local restaurant in the heart of Ubud, on the cutest lil...
Read moreWe loved this little local gem! Found on one of our first nights in Ubud and we went back pretty much everyday for the next week. Staff super friendly and welcoming, all family run. The breakfast smoothie bowls are delicious and really good value for money! We tried lots of different dishes on the menu and everything was gorgeous. Our favorites were the guacamole (best guac ever!) and the delicious homemade gazpacho soup. We often ate here on an evening and enjoyed their 40K cocktails - strawberry mojito is the best, so fruity and fresh. The dad of the family also has a small tourist information desk next to the restaurant where we booked our transfer to the Gilli islands. He was really helpful and it was the best value transfer we could find, even better than booking online and included a free taxi to the pier from Ubud. Couldn’t recommend this place enough, support local family run places in Bali - it means the...
