Union DELI — Restaurant in Jakarta

Unlike the other branches, this one is UNION "Deli", not the full brasserie version. So the space is more compact, and the menu is also more limited.

At the time, I was on a tight schedule and craving their Whole Roast Baby Chicken. But I had to settle for the nearest option, so I stopped by for a quick brunch. It was relatively quiet, not as packed as their brasserie branches, and you probably won’t need to make a reservation unless it’s a weekend.

Unfortunately, some of the items I wanted weren’t available, and coming in with a hungry belly and big cravings was definitely not the best idea. I ended up ordering the Crispy Pork Belly based on the waiter’s recommendation, although it wasn’t on my usual list. While the texture was great, the crispiness was on point, but the flavor fell short of my expectations (especially compared to the usual UNION standard). Indeed, I never order Indonesian dishes here, but I was hoping for something closer to authentic flavor. It didn’t hit the mark for me.

I'm not one to write reviews 1 star but I feel this is warranted so they may change what happened. I ordered the Steak and asked how many grams before ordering as I wanted to make sure it was enough. Waitress kindly asked the chef and the reply was 250grams. So I ordered the steak. Now don't get me wrong the steak was cooked perfectly but what peed me off was the steak was so small and was around 150 to 180grams if that. I'm in the same industry and have worked in kitchens and hospitality for years in several countries. Honesty is always the best policy. When I inquired about the steak the chef said it's 250grams including the fries etc lol. Then I asked him to weight the steak in front of me but wouldn't. Please be honest with your customers union group. I'm an avid supporter of your group but this is just not acceptable. If told at the start the steak was 150 or 180grams it would have been no drama. Some serious training needs to be done here. Happy to come in and do that for you. I hope you discuss this with your chef kitchen at union deli and remember honesty is the best policy. To be honest, they were just average that day. I ordered an egg plant sandwich which was supposed to have other items in it like, quinoa, pine nuts, etc. but I could hardly taste any of that. It was way too egg-planty. I also ordered a corn latte, and to be fair, I knew it was a risk considering I'd never tried anything like that before and it didn't really sound great to me but I was tempted. And yes, was disappointed. It was too sweet. The sweetness overpowered the coffee and I couldn't finish the tiny cup, that it was. It looked good, though (check out the photo). I'm giving them three stars because the food presentation was good and the staff was very courteous and polite (as usual in Indonesia), the interiors are great and in general the vibe of the place was good. But all it really boils down to in the end is the quality of food, and considering how much they charge for it, they can definitely do a lot more to make their food taste...
