I very rarely write reviews that are less than positive. But in this case I am. We came to Bologna for one day from Florence by high-speed train, and we were looking to sample the famous Bologna cuisine. In short, we made a mistake choosing this restaurant.
Some reviewers advised finding a small out-of-the-way place, rather than the large commercial restaurants closer to the main plaza. We also based our decision to come here because other reviewers gave it enthusiastic comments, including one who called it “a hidden gem.“ To that reviewer, I would say: You need to get out more and/or seek a better class of restaurants!
Our experience, I’m sorry to report, was very different and disappointing. Let’s start with the food because that is most important. On the bright side, my lasagna was quite good. However, my wife’s tortellini with cream and Parmesan cheese was just okay — nothing special or inspiring about it. Our grilled vegetables were nice, but completely unseasoned. This is the cuisine that Bologna is famous for? I hope not.
The service was adequate, but uninspired. For example, I don’t think the waiter came once to check on us during our meal about the quality of our food or whether we wanted anything additional. On the positive side, the physical atmosphere of the establishment was uniquely homey and funky
The location: After we arrived, we noticed that we were in the university area, and indeed most of the people walking up and down the sidewalk, where the few outdoor tables are located, were almost all young and seemed like college students. Could it be that the overall quality and level of service expected by college students is lower than that of a more mature clientele?
In sum, if this is one of the best restaurants that Bologna has to offer, then the cuisine that this city is famous for is not all that it’s cracked up to be! And this I don’t believe. I think we just chose the...
Read moreOur rbnb host recommended us to go here for dinner. After a couple day of great food experiences in Bologna we wanted to wrap up our short Bologna trip with a tortellini meal.
The place looks legit at first glance, but the extremely long menu is the first sign of an epic SCAM! How can you make all this food by your self? The glass of sangiovese gave it a little hope, but as soon as the plates arrived our worst fears were about to come true. My girlfriend ordered tortellini in Parmesan cream, and myself I ordered the tortellini Al brodo. Have you ever dared to buy the cheapest looking can of ready made food in a creepy looking supermarket? I haven’t but I imagine this is how it tastes like. Yuck! I don’t even dare to think what those tortellini were filled with.
The bill was 40€ in total. Please avoid Taberna del re Vallot, and do yourself a favor. I’m still struggling to digest this piece of...
Read moreI found a few pieces of plastic in my food. The service was very poor, after the manager came out and I told him about this, he took it away but I never got an apology. The service was terrible, they were aware I had just eaten plastic and did not come to clear our table or take any notice of us for 40 minutes. I was given a replacement dish which was not enjoyable also, but at least it was edible with no plastic in it. They then tried to charge us for 2 full bottles of water which we did not order, I think they saw we were foreign and tried to get away with charging us more, very poor choice when you have just fed someone plastic. Tried to chatge us double service charge as well. Truly awful. I wouldn't be writing this review if they handled the situation better. Rule 1: Don't feed your...
