This place came with a recommendation from our flamboyant airbnb host, who is a local. And it happened to be two steps away from the apartment we stayed at. We went for the dinner service, that starts a bit late at 20:00, but I'm sure the locals are used to eating dinner at that time. The restaurant, has very few staff members, but orders were quick to arrive to the table. The atmosphere left room for the table to be able to have a chat and there were historical pictures of Catania on the walls as a conversation topic They prominently advertise their beef menu (13€) and fish menu (18€) both with 3 dishes, no drinks included. There is also an option to order dishes outside of the menu, but all-in-all it seemed to be more cost efficient and convenient to go with the set menu. I ordered the fish menu. The first course in the set I had pasta with some swordfish. The pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente and came in a tomato sauce with some exotic swordfish, which I had never tried before. The fish just melted in my mouth and left me wanting more. For the second dish in the set I had a plate full of mixed fried fish. A simple dish that can be easily messed up in a number of different ways, but it was perfectly executed in this kitchen. The batter was crispy and the right amount of salty. I enjoyed the small fishes the most as there was no need to clean the bones! (Tip: if you eat fried fish, make sure to eat the fins and tail as they are the crispiest part of a fried fish. Almost like potato crisps.) The side dish was a salad with juicy tomatoes, a bit of sliced onion (rinsed of it's juices I assume, as the onion wasn't bitter or didn't leave a strong aftertaste) and ricotta cheese, if I remember correctly, with a pinch of pepper. The tomatoes were fabulous. To top it off, I ordered a glass of white wine to go with my meal. It was a generous helping that got me tipsy enough for the rest of the evening. Great restaurant that uses simple ingredients without overcomplicating any of the dishes. If you visit Catania you should definitely make the time to catch their lunch or dinner service if you want to try authentic Italian food!

La Taverna del Grande Albero (Trattoria Mediterranea) is a delightful culinary haven that captures the true essence of Mediterranean cuisine. The moment you step inside, you are welcomed by a cozy, rustic atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home. The decor blends traditional and contemporary elements, creating a warm and inviting ambiance perfect for any dining occasion. The menu is a celebration of Mediterranean flavors, offering a wide variety of dishes that showcase the freshest ingredients and authentic recipes. To start, I highly recommend the bruschetta al pomodoro and the seafood salad. Both appetizers are bursting with freshness and set the stage for the culinary journey ahead. One of the highlights of our meal was the homemade pasta. The tagliatelle alla Bolognese was simply divine, with a rich, flavorful sauce that tasted like it had been simmering for hours. The seafood risotto, another standout, featured perfectly cooked seafood and creamy rice, beautifully balanced with herbs and spices. For the main course, the grilled lamb chops were outstanding. They were tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection, served with a side of roasted vegetables that complemented the dish wonderfully. The fish of the day, a grilled sea bass, was fresh and expertly prepared, showcasing the chef’s skill and attention to detail. Desserts at La Taverna del Grande Albero are not to be missed. The tiramisu was a dream, with layers of light mascarpone and espresso-soaked ladyfingers. The panna cotta, smooth and subtly flavored with vanilla, was the perfect way to end our meal. The wine selection is impressive, featuring a variety of Mediterranean wines that perfectly match the menu. The knowledgeable staff are happy to provide recommendations, ensuring a perfect pairing. Service is impeccable. The staff are attentive, friendly, and passionate about the food. They go above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. In summary, La Taverna del Grande Albero (Trattoria Mediterranea) offers an exceptional dining experience with exquisite food, a warm atmosphere, and outstanding service. Highly recommended!

Well worth the 4.6 stars. Great little restaurant, seemingly family run. My wife said this was the best pasta vangole she has had in Sicily - very high praise, given she has eaten it probably 8 or 10 nights we have been here! The pasta alla Norma was the most interesting i have had, with the pasta in tomato sauce baked in a shell of aubergine and covered in cheese. This gave a really unique exterior, with caramalised aubergine that was slightly bitter against the salty cheese and sweet/acidic tomato sauce. Huge kudos for an interesting and tasty take on this dish. The tarte with fruits was a nice was to end the meal. Great place, highly recommend.
