What an unforgettable dining experience! Era Convivial Cave Restaurant in Matera is truly something special. The setting inside the ancient Sassi caves is magical—romantic, cozy, and beautifully designed, blending real cave walls with ancient stone architecture in a seamless and visually stunning way. We loved the variety of spaces, from the intimate cave room to the charming garden outside.

The food was outstanding—creative takes on classic Italian dishes using fresh, local ingredients. We had the beef tartare and the “riso, patate e cozze,” both rich with flavor. The aperitivo was fun and full of elegant surprises, and the tiramisù was the perfect finish.

The staff were warm, professional, and genuinely passionate about what they do. Davide, the head chef, was exceptional—he customized parts of the menu to meet our group’s dietary needs and recommended perfect wine pairings. The local wine list is impressive, with a great selection of natural and biodynamic options.

I want to give Era 5 stars for it's food quality, presentation, atmosphere and service, but I also want to give it 3 stars for it's blunder on the night we dined there. Our group of 4 had a great time here and found the meals fantastic. The portions were smaller than what we were used to but that's our fault for not ordering more dishes. The service was also great.

However, when travelling for 3 weeks at a time and constantly eating out trying to fit a budget, there are unexpected costs that usually stand out negatively.

We were fully aware of the coperti when sitting down, and made no assumptions when bread was delivered to us without asking. Usually if a restaurant asks we would assume it's chargeable, but in this case it was just dropped on our table, 4 small pieces of bread. It was only after getting home when we realized they charged us 8 EUR for a piece of bread each. A small inconvenience perhaps but soured the overall experience. Cosa dire, camminavano tra i sassi e stiamo stato colpiti da questo ristorante davvero davvero super per ambiente e personale. Personale cordiale amichevole ma senpre professionale cosa che non trovi in tutti i ristoranti, si vede che si respira aria nuova e voglia di mettere il.cuore in questo lavoro che può essere duro ma se fatto in questo modo è davvero gratificante. Passiamo al cibo, abbiamo optato per un menù scelto dalla chef e siamo partiti con due focacce ( produzione prorpoio che lo dico a fare anzi va sottolineato) una con pancetta e mayo alla senape e una con farina di grano saraceno con capocollo e parmigiano.... fantastiche. Abbiano poi viaggiato e siamo sbarcato in Puglia con riso patate e cozze servito in maniera anconvencional in bicchiere e con questo riso croccante che ci ha colpiti in maniera superlativa. Passiamo in Basilicata nuovamente dopo ci accoglie una crocchette di baccalà mantecato buonissimo accompagnato con una short di gazpacho di pomodoro con aggiunta di anguria ...... estro e inventiva dello chef. Arriviamo in Campania con la.loro parmigiana che dire davvero davvero buona. Si torna in Basilicata e Puglia con ragù di maiale lucano e orecchiette fatte in casa spettacolariiiiiiiiiii. Abbiamo assaggiato anche un raviolo fritto (idea davvero super) con sugo di verdure e un formaggio lucano che ha un acidità e un sapore sorprendente. Ci siamo fermato perché eravamo pieni ma.cera ancora spazio per un dolce... Crostatine con cioccolato e caramello e per finire ma non per ultimo Crema alici e the macha a gelato.... Avete letto bene alici e che gusto frwchezza sapidità contrasti per un dolce davvero mai banali. Considerazioni finali. Posto in cui si sente la passione la voglia di crescere la gioia di far parte di questo mondo ristorativo nel quale tanti imprenditori credono che sia tutto facile ma.che poi si rivela uno scoglio da superare, si aprono e so chiudono ma invece chi possiede questo privilegio dell'amore andranno avanti in questo modo davvero complicato.
