Read moreWe were so excited to try Ciacco Gelato after reading so many glowing reviews. The long line outside only built up our anticipation, and we didn’t mind waiting. Once inside, we appreciated being handed a booklet with English translations for all the flavors—it seemed like a thoughtful touch at first.
Unfortunately, the experience quickly went downhill. The staff rushed us, even though we were moving quickly and respectfully. Both employees working that day were shockingly rude and condescending. One of them forgot to give us a spoon, and when I politely pointed it out, she responded with visible annoyance. Worse, she walked away before handing us our final gelato order. When I told her, she aggressively handed me multiple spoons, as if I was being difficult, and I had to clarify that we were actually still missing a gelato.

Still, despite the misses, I commend Ciacco for pushing the limits — because some of the successes are magnificent! For example, a masala flavor was phenomenal — just like eating a dessert-version of butter chicken. There was also a fantastic fennel flavor.
The normal flavors — chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio, etc. — are all excellent and as good as any in the city: creamy, rich, and velvety. Ciacco also had the best matcha flavor I’ve had in Italy (a flavor that most outside Japan struggle to get right).
Whether you’re feeling adventurous or looking for a more-typical gelato experience, Ciacco cannot be beat in the...
