La Nuova Mergellina — Restaurant in Pavia

We had a craving for fish and based on a local’s recommendation - and the reviews here - we made a reservation.

We were accompanied by a friend who speaks Italian, and after some discussion with one of the owners we decided to let her choose our dishes. More on this later.

We had two antipasti: mussels baked in wine broth (some of the best we’ve tasted) and a warm, mixed seafood salad. Both portions were very generous and delicious.

In fact, with the crispy, delicious fried bread that accompanied the mussels we were all feeling quite satisfied. Our Italian-speaking friend was sure that only one secondi was forthcoming. A gigantic bowl of mussels and clams in a delicious tomato broth with short pasta arrived; there was enough food in that bowl for at least four (probably five) people, but it was delicious and since it was the last course (or so we thought) we gamely did our best to eat as much as possible.

We told the waiter we were quite done.

Imagine our surprise when another platter arrived, this time a whole grilled and butterflied fish, resting on medallions of swordfish. Tasty? Yes. But even remotely necessary based on good sense? Not at all. Then yet another big plate of frito misto seafood arrived. Again, there was simply too much food by any reasonable standard. We couldn’t come remotely close to finishing either of these last secondi.

Our companion who speaks fluent Italian commented early on that the woman who arranged our order was very assertive - he used the word “pushy” - and spoke very quickly even for him. After receiving the bill for €160 (which included two bottles of wine) we felt that some liberties had been taken by the owner.

Bottom line: four stars for the food quality; two stars for the service and sense that we were taken...

Lots of staff moving around to help customers with their orders.

Food was decently good and look beautiful as well.

Ordered for La Contadina, which was topped with lots of veggies, yellow bell peppers, tomatoes, basil leaves, aubergine etc.

Overally it was good, just that I wished it could just melt in mouth which is the only thing I feel would empower the serving the best way possible.

The dough was good and soft and it reflected in the " cornicione " ( the raised edge of the pizza ), but I feel it slightly changed by the time I reached the final slice. Still, it was atleast worth the money.

Friendly staff - some speak manageable English. Delivery to table was quick. Entrance looks small but the place is big as one goes inside with probably 2 to 3 sections for dining.

Ieri sera con la mia compagna era la prima volta nel locale , da premettere il personale era molto gentile e disponibile , la location molto carina ma purtroppo per quanto riguarda la nostra esperienza non ci siamo trovati benissimo . Nel particolare parlando del cucinato , nello specifico del pesce , nonostante su trip advisor sia tra i ristoranti di Pavia più buoni per il pesce a mio avviso NON POSSO CONFERMARLO ! ci è arrivato un antipasto da 15 euro che lasciava a desiderare con un misto di calamari polpo di discreta qualità , cozze decisamente fatiscenti al pari di quelle surgelate trovate nelle confezioni dei supermercati piccole secche e poco piacevoli alla vista , infatti le abbiamo evitate , ma la cosa più evidente era l'unica mazzancolla presente nel piatto per 2 persone che nn solo emanava un odore poco gradevole ma era piena di macchie bianche . A questo punto mi sono sentito in dovere di avvisare il cameriere con educazione e senza fare molte storie , mi è stato risposto che avrebbe avvisato la cucina , e l'unica risposta fornitami è stata che il pesce era ABBATTUTO ! ORA nn sono un esperto di metodi di conservazione ma abbattuto nn significa vecchio o avariato , la mazzancolla aveva la testa praticamente nera con delle macchie stranissime bianche mai viste prima e le cozze avevano ancora i filamenti vicino il guscio . Mi aspettavo che dalla cucina mi fosse arrivato qualcuno a scusarsi dell' inconveniente e magari portarne una porzione decente visto che del piatto abbiamo mangiato solo i calamari e il polpo e 2 cannolicchi . Andando avanti primi piatti discreti , di cui allego foto ma anche qui la qualità del pesce era molto bassa , ovviamente più difficile da capire in quanto condita a dovere , resa buona dall amalgama di olio prezzemolo e sugo fresco ma cmq una cozza e dei gamberi o delle vongole scadenti , per chi ne capisce di pesce si vede quando sono di bassa qualità . Dolce nella media di un qualsiasi locale . Per quanto riguarda il cucinato di pesce SCONSIGLIO IL LOCALE .per le pizze invece almeno a vedere quelle che arrivavano nei tavoli vicini posso dire che avevano un gran bell aspetto . Il tutto per una modica cifra di 85 euro vino e amari compresi ! Too Much per quello che abbiamo mangiato e per il locale !Mi dispiace aver dato questo giudizio ma da foto presenti su internet sembrava avere un livello più alto di qualità di pesce invece ahimé ne siamo rimasti delusi .. proveremo la pizza per vedere di...
