So it was our last night in Rome, had an absolutely cracker the night before, and wanted to go out with a bang. Now we didn't have a booking, and was aware that they were fully booked for the next week or so, however we were round the corner and thought we'd chance our arm on a late cancellation! Despite there not being a late cancellation, the gentleman on the desk of the hotel managed to weave some magic and got us a seat inside (the action is definitely on the terrace, but still very nice inside).
The place is very nicely set up on the 7th floor of the hotel with a cute outside bar on the terrace. We were permitted to have a glass of wine on the terrace, before heading inside for dinner. The waiting staff were brilliant, in particular the Romanian lady who looked after us very well. We hadn't eaten since breakfast, so arrived very hungry, and decided to go with 2.5 courses (starter, a shared pasta and meat) plus dessert.
Starters: I went for the tartare, and my partner the thinly sliced fillet of pork (basically like Parma ham), of which both were fantastic. The tartare was season to perfection and so delicately presented. The pork was a great combo with the peppery rocket, excellent start. Pasta: We shared a white duck ragout tagliatelle, absolutely on the money. Not as impressive as the starter, but delicious and hearty. Main: My beloved went for the showstopper lobster, and I went for the pork belly. Again, presentation was immaculate and very delicious. The lobster came with some grains which were an odd combo, but very delicious all the same. The pork belly came with some lovely spiced pickled cabbage and some roasted baby potatoes. Super yummy all round. Note: by the time we'd finished the starter, they'd kindly moved outside on the terrace as someone failed to turn up. Magic!
Naturally the last course would normally finish us off, but we managed to squeeze in a cheeky dessert! I went for the pistachio tiramisu (presented in a plant pot! So clever!), paired with a glass of port(??!) and the missus a chocolate fondant. Both were incredible (almost as incredible as the electrical storm we were treated to across the Rome sky).
It was the absolute best way to finish the trip, and the 5* review well deserved, and enjoyed this evening easily ahead of meals in Michelin standard eateries. I would head back here in a flash on a...
Read moreWe arrived at Ambrosia at the time our travel agency confirmed for our reservation only to find the agency had made a mistake and there was no reservation. Valentina, who is the true champion of the restaurant, saved our evening by moving tables around to allow us to sit outside on the rooftop patio even though they were completely booked for the evening. We had read online about how amazing the experience and food was here, so we were extremely grateful for the lengths they went to to accommodate us. We had also heard about Maurizio and his world famous M Martini, which we ordered as soon as we were seated and were transported to a magical chocolate alcoholic wonderland that we will not soon forget! Ermal took over from there and guided us through the menu and appropriate wine pairings. We started with the beef tartare, which, for the uninitiated, may sound frightening given the raw meat, but if you pass on this you will miss an absolutely true delight! It was utterly fantastic! Next up were the main courses of Tagliatelle with Duck ragout, Sesame seared tuna, steamed lobster and boneless guinea fowl. We have had the good fortune to dine at many places around the world and each meal here would stand at the very top of our all time favorites. The cherry on the top of our evening were the delicious desserts we enjoyed, the vanilla gelato cup with hot dark chocolate, the lemon delight from Sorrento and finally the pistachio Tiramisù with chocolate chips and amaretti biscuits each served with a dessert wine pairing recommended and perfectly matched by Ermal. We arrived in Rome earlier today and cannot imagine how our culinary experience here will ever be surpassed after this great evening. Many thanks to Valentina, to Maurizio and to Ermal for an amazing meal, spectacular service and an evening we will not...
Read moreWe ate at Ambrosia this week. The ambiance was good and our server was nice. However, we told them (Valentina) by email in advance that I have severe gluten intolerance, which they said they could accommodate. I ordered lobster, gluten free. When it arrived, it had a grain side which I was sure would be gluten free but upon taking a few bites, I quickly realized they had served me barley as one of the grains. We had the server check with the cook and the cook told the server he wasn’t sure if it was gluten free or not. Insert tears for me because I know this will mean a 3 day migraine attack. I asked to speak to the manager and explained the situation. He told me that the food is gluten free and “to not worry.” I asked what grains are in the dish and he did not know but just kept saying it was gluten free. Of course, I didn’t finish eating the side dish, but just those three bites set off a major migraine. My husband then emailed the restaurant again to tell them what happened and the manager, Fredrico, responded saying he stands by his previous statement that the food is gluten free and said maybe I ate some of my husband’s dish which wasn’t gluten free (which I did not). They don’t take allergies seriously and we are extremely disappointed in their...
