The experience was horrible. Having an ice cream should be a joyful thing, but this gelateria ruined it for me. All the employees were rude, unmannered, uninterested and they gave the impression they hated their job. The man at the pay counter couldn’t be less interested in his work, no hello, no eye contact. After paying, he just tossed the ticket on the table, when I reached for it. At the counter there was no cue or line, it was pure chaos. I didn’t get all the flavors I asked for. No explanation. They just don’t care. Like other people of color, I also sensed discrimination and racisme. The lady behind the ice cream counter was much friendlier to Italians and western tourists. She also served them first. I saw her being very very impolite to two asian girls. Making annoyed gestures “hurry up with choosing”, saying “and and?” While rolling with her eyes. I wish I had read the reviews first. I wouldn’t have come here. I don’t want to be treated this way for a stupid ice cream. They might have the history, but the attitude of the employees is unacceptable. And since these kind of reviews have been written by other people long time before, I guess management doesn’t care because whatever they do, people will still be coming for their cheap ice cream. There are so so many other good gelaterias in Rome. Try Che gelato, Gelateria del Teatro, Fatamorgana, Gunther… so good and more in the center so you don’t have to come to...
Read moreThe Palazzo del Freddo Giovanni Fassi, founded in 1880, is more than a gelateria—it’s a Roman institution and the oldest gelato shop in the city. Originally established by Giovanni Fassi, a former pastry chef for the Italian royal family, it quickly became a hub for artisanal gelato. Its most innovative concept, the Telegelato Giuseppina, allowed gelato to be shipped across Italy and abroad in the early 20th century, making it a pioneer in delivering frozen delights.
Housed in its historic building on Via Principe Eugenio, the gelateria has preserved its vintage charm, with vaulted ceilings, arched windows, and nostalgic posters that whisper stories of resilience, including its continuity through World War II. Signature creations like the Sanpietrino, gelato shaped like Rome’s cobblestones, reflect its deep connection to the city, while timeless flavors like pistachio, zabaione, and crema romana evoke a sense of tradition and craftsmanship.
Fassi has been a meeting point for generations, where locals and tourists alike savor the authentic taste of Rome. It’s a place of shared memories: families recount childhood trips, grandparents recall wartime gelatos, and tourists discover a slice of Roman heritage. Its blend of innovation, history, and community has made it not just a gelateria but a cultural landmark, embodying the sweet...

❌❌❌Racist employee alert
On my first visit, the owner greeted me in Korean, and the taste was decent, so I decided to visit again. However, on my second visit, an incident occurred.
There was a tall white male employee in his 40s or 50s who ignored my ticket for a long time, chatting with another Italian employee behind him. Even after that, he didn’t take my ticket and instead took the ticket of an Italian customer behind me, serving them first.
After finally taking my ticket, I ordered four flavors, but he only scooped three and without asking, added whipped cream to the fourth one.
It was clear to anyone that the size of the portions was different between the first and second visit. When I complained, he pretended not to speak English.
He then removed the whipped cream and added the tiniest amount of gelato using a plastic teaspoon.
I feel sorry for the owner for employing someone like this. The owner works hard selling gelato and speaking Korean to customers, while the employee is busy being racist. Because of this experience, my last day in Italy was ruined, and my impression of the Italy was tarnished.

❌❌❌ Dipendente razzista presente
