With a day of sightseeing, my wife and I knew that we were going to need to sit and refuel with some fantastic Roman-inspired Italian food.
Off a side street in the Middle of Rome, it almost blends into the street. Be careful or you might miss it. And trust us you don’t want to miss it.
When we walked into Mimi e Coco, we noticed that the outdoor seating basically doubled the amount of space they had! With it being a quaint space, there were maybe 12 tables combined indoors and outdoors. We were lucky enough to snag an indoor table before they had to start taking names to wait for a table.
We immediately ordered a red wine (Lambrusco) & an Aperol Spirtz. The red wine complimented my plates well while my wife found out real quick that Aperol Spirtz is not her drink of choice.
We ordered the Rosemary focaccia and it had a lot of snap to it. With a generous portion fo Rosemary, you couldn’t go wrong with a snappy & crunchy rosemary focaccia bread.
We made sure to save some of this bread for our entrees. The wife loved dipping the bread into her lasagna bolognese. I could tell she adored pairing her bread with the rich sauce. Definitely a winning combo.
Also she said this place had the best Italian food (excluding pizza & gelato) in Rome that we experienced on our trip. Her lasagna tasted the freshest and she loved how all of the notes in the lasagna worked well together.
I ordered the spinach & ricotta ravioli (covered in a tomato sauce) and absolutely loved it. The anticipation I had for a hearty tomato sauce was immediately put on pause. This was a thin and delicate sauce with sprinkles of parmigiana to help bring it together. The thin sauce assisted the ravioli’s tenderness while not being too much. I was afraid it might be a little floppy, but it was far from it. Texture wise was perfect.
The filling was ample with pockets of spinach delivered via a rich ricotta cheese being found in every bite. There we’re no mistakes with this dish.
Upon getting the check, they delivered two shots of Jager (one for each of us) as a “customary thank you”. Nice touch and a great end to a wonderful pitstop for lunch at Mimi e Coco.
Make sure to maximize your time in Italy & get here early to...
Read moreI came to Mimi e Coco for the first time in 2021 and remember my fridnd ordrring the bucatini. With one taste, I fell inlove with pasta and went back three days in a row. This time, in 2024, I returned to Mimi e Coco for the same pasta and was still just as blown away. If you read nothing eles in this review, just take my advice and order the bucatini.
Now for the staff...
We were greeted by the lovely LUCY who kindly showed us the line and let us know it would be about a ten minute wait - worth it. She let us switch tables from inside to out, and when she realized I had run down the street for line beers only to find that my mom had been seated, poured them into glasses for us and let us know that next time, we are welcome to order a drink from the bar to have in line. Lucy is one of those singular people who is kind and cool and you are sure to have an amazing experience every time you interact with her.
Next, let's talk about RABBI, our exceptional waiter and one of the kindest people we met while in Europe. He was patient, gave us tips for what to eat (bucatini or bust), and let us enjoy the atmosphere and ambience with no rush whatsoever. We miss you, Rabbi!
Finally, this review wouldn't be complete without mention of the talented bar-keeping skills of LIONCELLO. Not only bar skills (he makes on mean espresso martini), but charisma! After we came back for maybe our third time in two days, he made our drinks (letting me shake my own cocktail at the table) and then lingered a bit to chat so we could all get to know him a bit more. Super cool dude with major swag.
Thank you Lucy, Rabbi, and Lioncello for enhancing out stay in Rome with your incredible service, constant smiles, insane food (shoutout to the CHEFS we didn't have the pleasure of meeting!), and charming atmosphere. I hope to find you all here upon my retunr to Rome, which I hope will be sooner rather than later.
ANYONE READING THIS - EAT HERE!!! It is worth ANY wait time even at the peak of...
Read moreOnly leaving two stars and not one as we are huge fans of Mimi and Coco in trastavere for many many years now, but often find ourselves near to this one, have never liked the ambience but we thought okay, before we check into the Bulgari tomorrow, currently staying in the Airbnb nearby, planning to stay in trastavere (and visit the M&C tras then) after the Bulgari Rome, we would try this one for the first time.
A line, but not very long, as I told my boyfriend, we don’t do lines, in New York, even London, you don’t wait in a line (ie no one decent does; it is literally tourists in backpacks, etc).
Nevertheless, my boyfriend insisted on waiting in the line.
During which time of course I have been smacked into countless times (in heels, floor length dress, Chanel, my usual no matter what im doing, even 16 hour flights, but of course, not the norm here in Rome or anywhere worldwide), by backpacks and sloppy typical tourists. eventually, after waiting for a certain point, I said, perhaps we should go elsewhere (then my boyfriend was looking at other places nearby that serve basic salmon salad; we don’t eat before midnight so this is early and making an exception for us to go at all), the staff bashed into the Indian couple in front of us (just me at the time), shoved the ashtray that exists as the line delineation into them, and said the line needs to be behind here, also taking a family of four complete slobs with screaming children ahead of the rest of the line since they were a party of four.
The ambience here, the customer service or lack there of, really is a far departure from the...
