We were so excited to try this spot after reading the great reviews on Google and in travel blogs. My dad is gluten free/dairy free and could not wait to try this spot out for dinner one night. Unfortunately this spot was everything but great. We arrived in time for our reservation and seated promptly, as being seated told not to order pizza since it would take so long… which was odd but none of us wanted pizza, so was fine. Sadly we did not have a server come over to us for almost 40 mins, we tried waving them over and they would completely ignore us. We saw tables next to us getting drinks, food, multiple visits- we were able to walk out when someone came by. We explained my dads allergies to the server who was so incredibly rude we almost left again. She said her boss told her that if anyone had allergies to tell them they couldn’t eat there- which was confusing as the reviews and blogs I read spoke so highly of this spot as having vegan options and gluten free options. I mentioned this to her, asking if they were vegan/had gluten free options, which she said yes they just don’t have a separate kitchen and cross contamination could occur (which is how it is at most restaurants are) My dad decided to risk it since we had been sitting for so long and all were hungry- and thankfully he was okay. At this point had been to a couple other gluten free/vegan spots in Rome and never had a server be so aggressive about not being able to eat anything- if we hadn’t waited 40 minutes before even having her come by we would have left. It was so off putting the rest of the meal was sub par. I couldn’t even tell you what we ordered, we just wanted to get out of there due to how rude the servers were. Food allergies are serious and we appreciate them being taken seriously but they are also difficult and having someone tell you you can’t eat anything there was very shocking. Anywhere else we had been in Rome/Italy was willing to accommodate and work with my dad to find him something to eat if they couldn’t guarantee something. Maybe if you are vegan due to dietary preference this spot is for you- but if you have allergies I would avoid it and try La Soffitta Renovatio near Vatican City instead who were super friendly and...
Read moreI arrived here after a very long flight and was hungry. Since I am a vegetarian and this place has many vegan options, I imagined their chef knows well how to cook flavorful vegan meals. The menu also has many selections for people that are not vegetarians. Therefore I imagined this is a place skilled at serving delicious meals for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
The waitress was friendly and answered all my questions. We then ordered. I ordered the vegan spaghetti carbonara. I was disappointed. It did not have a delicate balance of flavors imbedded in this dish. It was missing the taste it was supposed to have because it was heavy on salt. The salt over-powered what it should have been. The chef could have balanced so much flavor into this to make it pleasing on the palate, but it was drowned in salty flavoring that it completely missed the mark. I was so disappointed because I had come so hungry from a very long flight. I took 3 guests with me here for dinner. I felt embarrassed because 2 of them, also, did not like their meals. Only 1 person liked her meal, and she ate it all (the rest of us were unable to finish it). The meal that the one person liked was spaghetti that had been made in some kind of lime sauce with tomatoes. That dish hit the mark. Its flavor blended well.
The waitress was polite to ask us if we enjoyed our food. Which was kind of her to question (seeing that we ate little of it and had no desire to take it home when asked).
I would not plan to return here, nor recommend it to vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters, because it missed the mark on both types of people. In the end, I found it a waste of money spent here.
The waitress was nice and the atmosphere looked nice, but their chefs missed the mark on creating something tasty that could have been so delicious. The plates that my non-vegetarians guests had were the lasagna (containing meat) and the pasta (spaghetti) with tomato sauce. (Both could not finish...
Read moreFair warning: this place can be pretty popular, so consider calling ahead for a day in advance for a reservation. My wife and I were able to get lucky with walking in and getting a table, but other groups after us were not as lucky and had to wait for tables to open up. Now, for the reason why it’s popular: this is literally the best food I had when I was in Rome. It’s also an absolute haven for vegetarians visiting Rome. I had pesto gnocchi, which had gnocchi that melted in your mouth that swam in a very generous amount of fresh pesto. My wife’s vegan lasagna was delicious, as long as you keep in mind that they are using vegan cheese with seitan protein which will of course taste different than normal lasagna.
We also ordered a side of thick-cut fries, which came out hot and crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside.
For drinks, we ordered chinnoto (always delicious) along with a ginseng coffee, which tasted incredible and was honestly the best coffee I’ve tasted in Rome. Mind you though, I prefer my coffee with milk and sugar, I was never able to get on board with drinking straight espressos like many Italians do, so the ginseng coffee may or may not be for you based on this.
We didn’t order any dessert because of how full we were, but I’m sure it would have been great as well. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to anybody visiting Rome, regardless of whether or not you are vegetarian. However, if you are vegan or vegetarian, then you simply MUST...
