Wow. My husband and I are HUGE fans of sushi. We began our relationship on a mutual love of the Japanese delicacy, we included several rolls on our wedding menu, and we treat ourselves with a boat for every special occasion. Spoiled by the sushi scene in Raleigh, NC, we have been extremely disappointed by our sushi escapades since moving to Pensacola, FL. Temakinho had the BEST sushi we have eaten since our move, which we certainly weren’t expecting during our honeymoon in Italy of all places.
The rolls, albeit a bit smaller than we are used to, were exceptional. This restaurant was the only place we had been since arriving in Italy (we spent time in Milan, Florence, and Seiano preciously) that did not give us an English version of the menu. However, we are not picky when it comes to sushi, so we just went with rolls that did not have the vegetarian or “cooked” symbols (since we prefer raw fish in our sushi) and avoided the word “Philadelphia,” assuming that referred to cream cheese. Each roll was unique, and it was easy to pick out individual flavors (although we’re awful at identifying what they are... despite how much sushi we consume regularly).
After sharing the salmon ceviche and 5 rolls, we were so impressed (and still slightly hungry because we are Americans, and we like to feast) that we ordered one more roll. We were so glad we did because, although it wasn’t our favorite, it was like nothing we have ever had before. The Baja roll (I think is what it was called) was like biting into a rice-wrapped nacho. We could taste the salsa, the fish, jalapeño, and the corn chips all in one bite. It had a kick to it, but the guacamole on top toned it down. Yum.
We might be making another reservation for tonight. If you do plan on going, make sure to make a reservation beforehand. We tried to go the night before without one, and they looked at us like we were insane and told us we’d have at least an hour long wait.
Overall, price was great (not sure why there are 3 dollar signs - it’s moderately priced for a sushi restaurant), service was friendly, space was very trendy (couldn’t get over the 50’s diner vibe and pineapple wallpaper), and food...
Read moreI dropped in here for a quick bite to eat that didn't include pizza or pasta. Service brisk, burly, unfriendly even upon entering, leave alone after you order. The menu so so weird, with Spanish or Portuguese subtitles for the dishes and then list of ingredients in Italian, presumably in a nod it being, somehow, the so called Japanese tapas. It is neither. No help offered navigating bizarrely titled dishes, at least the pretence did not extend to it being in Japanese! I thought it safe to go for tuna tartare piccante, and what sounded like croquette (crocante). What arrived was strange tuna tartare, and though I was charged for the ordered spicy version, it certainly was just plain cheaper version, the creation of bland industrially minced tuna, with not an iota of seasoning, served with nothing but some pickled ginger. The crocante turned out to be sort of pastry rolls with what appeared as salmon and egg (?) baked from frozen into oblivion. Since for some bizarre reason they brought them out together, and one usually eats fresher lighter dishes first, these strange rolls were going cold as I did so. Sushi at my neighbours' table looked similarly unappetizing. Yes, it is always nice to have a change to traditional cuisine offering, but this fusion confusion is not a worthy replacement, especially with absence of any semblance of service. With one drink this sorry affair was €31. So not just bad but also...
