Not sure what the negative reviews are about. I’m guessing they are mostly from Americans (disclaimer: we are also Americans) who showed up with an American attitude, or who aren’t fully versed in how things work in Rome. Was our waiter initially a bit gruff? Yes. That’s how things work here sometimes. But he was ultimately GREAT. ALL the staff was. Very outgoing and friendly.
You can’t just walk into a business here and straight out ask for a table. You need to order a greeting first… Italians are ALL about relationships. So you need to establish that relationship. A simple and cheery “Buonasera!” will get you far here.
We had a LOVELY experience at Tritone 1884. We showed up very casual… shorts, t-shirt, I was wearing a ball cap when we got there (which was promptly removed once we were greeted… Italians find men wearing hats inside disrespectful, doubly so at the dinner table, and frankly I wish America would go BACK to that standard). So that is what I expect the initial gruffness was about (it was a long day for us, from Trastevere through all of Rick Steve’s walking tour of the heart of Italy, including Campo di Fiori, Palazzo Farnese, Piazzo Navona, the Pantheon, Parliament, Piazza Colonna, Via del Corso, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps, so we were not in our Sunday best.
That said, they accommodated us in a lovely outdoor table. ALSO: we have always made an effort to speak the local language, and Italians have definitely respected that and have treated us very nicely just because we have an effort. Yes… most of the service industry in Rome speaks plentiful English. But if you show SOME kind of effort in speaking Italian, it opens hearts, smiles, and relationships.
I ordered a Negroni to kick things off, and it was by far the largest Negroni that I’ve ever had… bigger even than I make at home, and I make a 4.5 ounce Negroni there!!! My wife got a lovely Prosecco. Both delicious.
We started with the mixed plate of cured meat, which was PLENTIFUL and quite good. We got a bottle of nice Chianti for our main s, which were lamb chops for my wife and the tripe for me… both were very good! If you are on the fence about the tripe, hop on over and give it a go. It’s delicious.
We were fairly stuffed (and I’m trying to not gain 15 pounds during our extended stay in Italy!) so we passed on Dolce, but all of their desserts looked AMAZING.
So skip the negative reviews here, learn some passing Italian and show some effort, and you’ll have a lovely time here enjoying some great food and...
Read moreThis is a small restaurant located in a very busy district near Via Tritone near the Trevi Fountain. The restaurant has many of the usual Italian selections that you can find pretty much anywhere in Rome. The food is fresh, and generally speaking well prepared. You won't find much innovative on the menu, but the pastas and starters we got were well done. We found ourselves in the area more than once and went back there a second time, and it was just as good. The first time we arrived late in the afternoon and had a selection of salads and anti-pasti which were well prepared and the portions quite generous. Carpaccio with Arugula and Parmesan shavings with an olive oil and lemon dressing was fresh and delicious. A sea-food salad was full of plump shrimp and succulent calamari and octopus and some lettuce and cherry tomatoes. The octopus carpaccio was tasty and the portion generous. The kid had Rigatoni with a simple tomato sauce which was fresh and well prepared. All in all a tasty late lunch or early dinner starter. This is notable only because in many restaurants with the exception of panini and pizza/salad places you cannot get served between the hours of 3-7PM. Your only real resort is a slice of pizza or a panini (notably many of which are very good). But it is tough to get a sit down meal during the afternoon/late afternoon. The second time we went we all had pastas as well as a few antipasti. All the starters and pastas were fresh and well prepared, so we were suitably impressed. The restaurant also has a fairly extensive wine selection but be prepared to pay handsomely for a relatively ordinary bottle of wine. The markup seems to be in the times three range, if the bottle we had was any indication, we saw it later in the mercato for 1/3 the cost we paid there. The prices for the food we had were reasonable and what we had come to expect for a decent meal in Rome; Expect to pay about €40 per person for a starter, pasta or main and a glass of wine. The wait-staff was cordial but in that brusque italian style which seems to be a standard in Rome. Stay-Leave we don't much care...but they were friendly enough to us and our 3 year old. All in all a recommended spot in a...
Read moreIf I could give 0 stars I would. Horrible experience left me in tears and feeling very uncomfortable as a solo female diner. The head waiter was rude and aggressive, an older gentleman I don’t know his name. I had greeted the initial servers in Italian but this man came to take my order. He stood right above me very close staring at me not saying a word very unnerving so I got flustered and started trying to order as I thought that was what he was waiting for and I think this angered him “ok English then” and he was really rude to me all evening. If he had greeted me normally I would have greeted him back. I am very shy but try my best to be polite and use as many Italian words I know but he threw me off with weird intimidating behaviour. He then smacked my head with a plate or tray as he walked past and did not say anything to me just carried on serving. Only when he turned around to come back and saw me staring at him in disbelief did he say “sorry lady” as he walked past. Everyone saw and was staring at me it was so humiliating, and it really hurt my head, so I got very upset. Nice people at the table next to me leant me some tissues. The staff ignored me despite me asking for the bill 3 times so eventually had to go to the till myself and insist on paying and leaving now. I was hungry so had wanted a full dinner but I left early as it was such an unpleasant experience and I felt really unwelcome. I also did not tip as I usually do because the service was so shocking. The seating was very cramped. The food was quite bland the only nice bit was the pork in the Rigatoni Gricia. Not worth the money. I have social anxiety and this was the first night of my solo trip so really threw me off and made me nervous about going to restaurant alone again. I would not recommend this place to anyone especially solo women or English speakers as they seem to...
