I walked past this shop when it was closed and vowed to return during opening hours. Very glad I did. When I arrived the shop man was fixing a light with another man. Noone was particularly welcoming- busy with the light. I overheard the owner thank the man and then proceeded to offer him a free sandwich and a beer for his help. My Italian is quite basic but the owner can speak English well. I ordered my sandwich and left. I wanted my friend to see the shop as its quite sweet - we returned and the owner welcomed us back warmly. After a bit of a chat he sat us outside with a free bottle of red wine and a warm smile. He later returned with some sweets for us. We remained perched there for quite some time encouraging passersby to come in and sharing our wine with others. We then decided we wanted to try some of the other meats / cheeses so got a platter. The owner came out again and gave us another free bottle of red wine! The meat on the platter was some of the best we've eaten and the experience was so very wonderful and a highlight of our siena food...
Read moreWonderful place we randomly found while looking a lunch place in Siena. There was little line outside, mainly locals so we took that as a good sign. And boy, so happy we decided to wait our turn. Because we honored the 'no photos' sign i try to describe the view what treated our eyes when we got past the heavy curtains. Small shop with counter full of cured meats, sausages and aged cheeses. Behind the counter was owner(?), in his chef's hat and handlebar moustache. And the aromas in the shop were heavenly. We ordered focaccias filled with several types of freshly cut meat and cheeses and asked wine to go with them. Everything was perfect to the point, maybe little pricey but still worth every euro spent. Someone was complaining about the service in reviews but we got little smiles behind the moustache while he was making our order, the wine chosen to us was 6/5. If you want to sit down go elsewhere, if you want to taste authentic local "street food" with really good wine this...

Okay, so on to the real bit. Siena has been my second home for four years now, and it’s people like Antonio and Stefano that make the city what it is: warm, accommodating, memorable. They remember every cheese, every wine, and every sweet you like. Grotto-aged pecorino, the finest Vin Santo (L’Occhio dell’Pernice, in case you’re interested), tomato marmalade, daily-baked bread, wafer-thin prosciutto...you get the picture.
Literally nowhere else in the city I would rather be, and no other place deserves more praise for being a local staple. I am proud to call these men my friends and cannot recommend this little Senese gem strongly enough. They are an asset to the community and may they deliver many, many more delicious crudo plates to come!
Grazie mille, i miei amici carini, e ci vediamo...
