Mugolone, a restaurant in Siena with a strong online presence, creates the impression of being a top-notch dining destination, but unfortunately, our experience fell short of that expectation. The restaurant boasts all the trappings of a high-end establishment, including a tasting menu, well-trained staff, a stylish website, and an inviting ambiance.
Upon embarking on the 7-course tasting menu, we found that while the dishes were daring and original, they often lacked the taste, balance, and composition that one would expect from a fine dining experience. A few dishes did stand out as quite delicious, but overall, the culinary journey was inconsistent.
The evening's highlights featured a delightful pea soup, delectable tortellonis with truffle, and a scrumptious dessert cheesecake. While the service started off well, it became apparent that the restaurant was understaffed as more guests arrived, leading to a decline in service quality. Unfortunately, the cold served wild boar with tuna paste was a low point, as it was in an overly generous portion, which we struggled to even finish. Additionally, the braised veal with mashed potatoes was utterly disappointing, as it lacked any discernible flavor.
Despite the reasonable price of approximately €100 for the tasting menu plus 3 glasses of wine per person, the inconsistent quality of the food makes it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend Mugalones. In summary, the restaurant feels like a tourist trap masquerading as a high-end...
Read moreWe came across this restaurant, and were seated when it was relatively early and quiet, but it took a very long time for anyone to return and ask us for our drink order. When someone did come she abruptly came up with pen to paper, like a diner waitress. No greetings or suggestions. I had to ask ‘are you here to take our drink orders’? When I said I was wanting to order a glass of wine, which I was then just going to order from the menu, before I could finish my sentence she said ‘I don’t know wine’ and stormed off to get the sommelier. So we waited for him for a while. He was quite gracious and pleasant fortunately. But it just set the tone and the service from everyone besides the sommelier/waiter was so awkward. We did have a great first round of drinks, the food was ok but took forever, and no one asked if we wanted any more drinks. There was a lot of sitting and waiting. At first we thought maybe we did something to offend the waitstaff, but I noticed it was hit or miss with the other tables too, but at least they had wine to drink while they waited! I was later very surprised to see that they were Michelin rated, I would have expected a much better experience and food. The prices definitely reflected the...
Read moreWhat could have been a 5 star experience quickly divulged into a painfully slow and awkward time. Our servers were attentive and food was fantastic UNTIL one thing went wrong. One of our party members food got mixed up? But the apps were coming before pasta and next thing you know we are eating mains while she is still on pasta. The manager? Clearly let the server know of the issue because we could see them all talking and pointing but from that point on nothing was done to address the situation. No explanation, no apology. Our table went unattended for the remainder of the meal. Her main course finally came out and it was undercooked. We addressed in the nicest way possible and all we got after was “sorry about the fish” and “would you like a limoncello?” That was a nice gesture but would have been better served during the 45 minute wait for her main course than after an hour of being ignored and ready to pay the bill to leave.
Food and atmosphere could easily be 5/5 but if anything goes wrong it can...
