Stumbled upon this place for dinner after being turned away at La Molinara and oh my lord, I'm so glad that we did and found this gem. Our waiter Erico was also a superstar all night and easily stands toe-to-toe with Michelin star service we've received elsewhere (if not better) - btw the entire crew here was warm and eager to serve so 5/5 for the entire front of house.
Onto the restaurant, food was consistent and excellent. Simple classics done REALLY well with some innovation thrown in. We had the charcuterie and cheese board for antipasti, as well as the octopus cappuccino (very interesting! Fresh gazpacho flavours + well cooked octopus).
For mains we did Risotto all'Amarone (standout of the night - perfectly cooked with a dangerously appetising sour and savoury kick) and boiled meats (very good, but a bit heavy for my liking. Not a criticism but rather a note on personal preference. If you like big fatty notes, this is the one for you).
Tiramisu for dessert was solid, would give it a 4/5.
Service, as mentioned previously, was some of the best I'd received, Michelin / Top 50 or not. Erico was attentive (e.g. replacing my towel when it dropped on the floor without me knowing), providing a substitute for Amarone by the glass (which was usually only sold by the bottle) where their usual by the glass selections had run out, suggesting a very interesting dessert Valpolicella and just being overall professional, willing to have a great chat and helping us to have a nice, relaxed evening.
The rest of front of house was smiley, patient and overall warm.
Would highly recommend anyone to come here if you do come to Verona. This is some gold standard cooking and service anywhere in Europe and if I had only time for one place in Verona, it'd...
Read moreOur dinner at Osteria Il Bertoldo was a fantastic experience. The service is good and the vibe and (although the restaurant is a little on the smaller side) the vibe and ambiance is very romantic. The service was also very good.
The thing that really elevates this restaurant, though, is just how good the food is. My wife and I tried two different meals (boiled rabbit with polenta and truffle gnocchi) and both meals were absolutely fantastic. The truffle gnocchi was honestly one of the best pasta dishes I had in all of Italy (and it turned me, someone who normally isn't the biggest fan of mushrooms, into a truffle lover. The boiled rabbit was extremely tender and very flavorful (and the sauce it is coated in adds very much to the experience). Many Americans might be hesitant to try rabbit, but I highly recommend it - it was both unique and extremely delicious (and not gamey at all).
The desserts were also very solid, with a good classic tiramisu and a fantastic regional cheesecake adorned with a fruit mousse and fresh raspberries. I'm not a huge cheesecake fan, but my wife enjoyed it so much that I'd say it should get a solid recommendation from us!
Also, don't forget to try some of the wines they have on their menu! They provided us with a really solid recommendation and it was probably some of the best wine we had in Italy.
Definitely go to dinner at Osteria Il Bertoldo if...
Read moreThe octopus cappuccino starter was reasonably pleasant, but somewhat overpriced.
Zucchini were ok. Nothing too spectacular, but nice texture, they weren't overcooked.
Black ravioli were a bit cold in the filling.
Tagliatelle were flavoursome, al dente. A little oily though.
85 euros for two, two courses each, wine and water.
Nice decor (apart from a picture of the roman arena). Staff reasonably attentive.
Probably an average kind of place, won't rush to go back though.
Edit: the establishment said in their reply that it regrets that the food was not too my culinary taste. They assumed, incorrectly, that I am not familiar with Italian cuisine.
Their reply added that the food was not too my taste and that they do not make spaghetti with ketchup.
Such a comment is derogatory and infantile. I see this as a reflection on the restaurant and its owner. Such rudeness and arrogance doesn't deserve custom.
Shame on you for that comment.
Maybe you can reflect on the excessive oil at the bottom of a plate of tagliatelle, cold filling in the tortellini, unjustified inflated prices.
Perhaps listening, instead of insulting costumers, would help you improve.
Not that I care, I shall definitely not be...
