On the north side of Piazza Del Erbe are the ancient town hall, Torre dei Lamberti, Casa dei Giudici (Hall of the Judges) and the frescoed Mazzanti Houses. On the shortest west side is the Baroque Palazzo Maffei, decorated with statues of Greek gods. It is flanked by a white marble column with the Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of the Venetian Republic. In this square you are surrounded by history, aesthetics, art, mythology and elegance. Everywhere you look there is a different history, art and intriguing experiences. If a guide can explain this square to you in its entirety and with all its experiences, you may end your trip here. The most ancient monument of the square is the fountain with the statue of the Madonna of Verona, built in 1368. Why do we say the most ancient monument? Because it is a Roman statue known to date from around 380 AD. The Scaliger Tombs (Arche Scaligere) are five burial structures of the Scaliger family of the 13th and 14th centuries in Verona, Italy. The tombs are located in a courtyard outside the church of Santa Maria Antica. Built in the Gothic style, they are mostly open tabernacle-like structures raised off the ground, with a sarcophagus covered by an elaborate baldachin and a statue of the deceased on horseback and in armor. According to the French historian Georges Duby, they are one of the greatest examples of Gothic art.

Who doesn't love a medieval Piazza. It is chaotic and astir with activities, restaurants, bars, boutiques, clicky tourists....we passed through purely by coincidence, I am not a fan of overcrowded places, unfortunately my other half is - he likes to indulge in an Aperitivo nearby, under those iconic umbrellas to soak in the atmosphere and people watching. The Veronesi love their spritz, almost every bars outdoor seats were brimming with carefree tourists and locals. I took the opportunity to admire the old monuments surrounding the plaza, for example the cascading Fountain of Madonna smack bang in the middle of the hectic square, beautifully painted Mazzanti House, Torrei dei Lamberti, the majestic Palazzo Maffei with statues of Hercules, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Apollo, and Minerva, a whale rib bone dangling from Arco della Costa. A market here sells, vegetables, drinks and souvenirs - fancy a mask from Venice without going to the canal city itself? You will find one to your liking. I noticed that they shut down at 6PM. A few hours later, my other half is still sitting in the very same spot and had taken the liberty to order a BOTTLE of Prosecco.😂. Like it or not, I had stayed on till dusk at the oldest square but indeed a lively heart of Verona.

Verona is a jewel of medieval architecture and art. The most beautiful and loveliest love story ever played in this city, the one about Romeo and Juliet. The town is located on the banks of the river Adige, and its cultural heritage leaves everybody breathless. One of the jewels of Verona is Piazza delle Erbe. The rich history of this square and nearby palaces is visible at every step. It's nice to sit on the terrace of the restaurant and watch the busy life on the square. It is significant that Piazza delle Erbe in Roman times was the center of political and economic life (Forum). In time, Roman buildings were replaced by medieval buildings, most notably the Torre dei Lamberti ( high tower with clock and bell ). In the center of the square, it is exist the 16th century Berlina with 4 pillar which was used to select city leaders. In the square you can see the fountain and the pylon with the lion - a symbol of loyalty to Venice. The real masterpiece is Palazzo Maffei, which is decorated with statues of Greek gods. We are enjoyd in nice atmosphere and this square is an imposing story.
