Visited Somuri Beppu Main Restaurant to try Bungo beef during our trip 🥩.
I ordered the Filet Steak Course (¥8,200) with Garlic Rice (+¥800), while my companion had the Pepper Steak (¥5,000). The filet was tender, the salad dressing was well-balanced, and the onion gratin soup was full of flavor — overall, the food itself was satisfying and enjoyable 😋.
However, I was deeply concerned about the hygiene practices observed at the counter 🧼❌.
The chef repeatedly handled raw meat with bare hands, then went on to touch cooking utensils, dishwashing buckets, and even clean tableware — without washing or sanitizing their hands at any point. What was especially troubling was that this cycle continued: after handling soiled items and various surfaces, the chef returned to touching raw meat with bare hands again — no visible handwashing or disinfection in between. Since the kitchen is open and visible from the counter, this behavior was impossible to ignore and left a strong negative impression ⚠️.
Additionally, the service felt inattentive. The staff used informal language that lacked professionalism 💬, and they asked us twice about our after-meal drinks — suggesting a lack of communication or attention to detail.
For this price range, I expected a more refined and mindful dining experience 💸✨.
It’s truly unfortunate, because the food was clearly prepared with care and skill. But due to the poor hygiene practices and underwhelming service, I wouldn’t consider...
Read moreDear American tourists, you’ll be very glad you went to this restaurant! The local beef that they serve is truly amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything like it. They have expensive meals of multiple courses, but they also have cheaper options where you can just order a steak dinner. One thing cool is that they have counter service, so it’s great for tourists who are traveling alone or in pairs. The counter also is a place where you can see them cooking and prepping and enjoy that activity while dining. We went with a larger group and had a reservation so they put us in the back area with a screen separating us from the other guests. It was a very relaxing and lovely meal. most of us ordered a sirloin, either a small or medium and one of us ordered a fillet. My medium rare sirloin was perfectly cooked and just melted in my mouth. the other courses were totally fine and delicious but what was exceptional was the steak. The service was of the type that you call them if you need something. There is a button on the table to do that which makes it easy and when you push the button, they come immediately.the only reason for service is because of it being this type where you have to call them to get help. This is very normal in Japan, but might be below expectations for Americans spending this much money on a meal. All in all I...
Read moreThe restaurant is located on the first floor, and though it was busy when we arrived, we were greeted warmly and only waited a few minutes for a table.
Ordering is straightforward, with a tablet at each table that includes an English menu.
The steak itself was excellent. It was cooked just right, tender, and paired with tasty sides and a well-balanced sauce that complemented the flavours nicely.
While waiting, we could watch the chef preparing the meat. It was impressive to see the care and precision that went into cutting, seasoning, and cooking the steak, showcasing true craftsmanship.
If you’re in Beppu and want to try Bungo beef, Somuri Steak is well...
