Instagram:osaka.okkun(Japanese office worker、travel world every month) ・Original Tonkotsu Ramen:980 JPY ・Additional green onions:130 JPY ・Small rice:200 JPY Japan's leading ramen chain restaurant, Ichiran. Its head office is in Fukuoka. Yeah, of course, this is the first restaurant I visit on my trip to Fukuoka. My visit was at the beginning of August 2023. Unfortunately, my trip to Fukuoka coincided with a typhoon. Even though I came to Fukuoka from Osaka, many restaurants were closed due to heavy rain & strong wind. Even in such a situation, this restaurant is definitely reliable. The entrance to this restaurant is on the 2nd floor. Even in the heavy rain, many foreigners and Japanese office workers are lined up on the stairs leading up to it(there are more foreigners than Japanese.lol). I was surprised to find that truly popular restaurants have long lines regardless of the weather. There were about 10 people in line in front of me, but the wait was only about 10 minutes. As you all know, paper order forms is handed over, ・Strength of taste ・Amount of garlic ・Types of green onions ・With or without chashu ・Noodle hardness select these things and order original ramen you like(toppings circled with dotted lines are recommended by Ichiran) There are various techniques when filling out this order form. For example, the green onion. You can choose between white onions and green onions, but if you circle both, you can get both. Also, when handing the form to the staff, if you tell them that you want the green onions on a separate plate, the ramen will be served without it, instead of being topped on ramen(For example, this is useful when sharing ramen with your child who doesn't like green onions). And speaking of Ichiran, a table with partitions called Ramen Focus Booth. It allows you to concentrate on enjoying your ramen in a relaxed manner, free of unnecessary distractions. This system also supports a uniquely Japanese way of thinking. For Japanese people who care about what others think of them, going out to eat alone is not a good idea. (I think this is crazy, because I don't care how others think of me at all. That’s why my life is excellet, as you can see on my Instagram. lol) So, spread as a ramen restaurant that is good for even one person to eat. Needless to say, the rich soup & ramen noodles are very delicious. Having eaten a lot of ramen, I honestly thought that Ichiran's ramen was just for tourists. The idea was turned 180 degrees.

Hai yes the Grand Headquarters of Ichiran Ramen - the pride of Hakata OSU. It’s a huge tall building with all the Ichiran colours n huge flags denoting Ichiran - You can’t miss it! ☝️The ichi ban ramen for Tonkatsu Ramen has its Iconic head office and an outlet here in Fukuoka! The outlet has 2 types of seatings, the usual single counter seats or yatai styled ones. The Ramen is ordered quintessentially Ichiran style - machine n finalised with a note for condiments n way u like your noodles. Tick it off - non spicy, spicy or very spicy/ noodles soft, medium, hard etc etc. It’s all very standardised and efficient. Ichiran Tonkatsu Ramen is then served in their unique Rectangular “Bowl”, shutters are pulled down for privacy n you’re off to slurp your noodles in peace. The broth is as expected thick with strong umami that has the deep taste of pork bones that have been boiled forever n ever! Yummylicious! Again I would add - some red ginger or tsukemono would give the meal that 101% touch. Once done and after that prerequisite Burp denoting full satisfaction, u head off with the sweet memory that u had your Ramen at the Mecca of Tonkatsu Ramen - Ichiran HeadQuarters! Gochisusama deshta 🙇🏼♂️Over n Out!

Writing this review took longer than ordering, receiving and devouring this delicious Ramen. This is the original Ichiran in Fukuoka and it is a hive of activity as groups of diners enter, smash their bowls of ramen and then pay/exit. They specialise and serve only tonkotsu ramen. I'm going to say this is one of the best ramen I have ever had. In the tonkotsu style it is easily the best - the broth packs bags of flavour which is further intensified by the spiciness which adds another dimension. The other fabulous inclusion here is angel hair noodles over the regular thick instant type. This allows for maximum soup-and-chew slurp factor which invariably means you finish everything together - which is very satisfying. Unlike some ramen shops, this is a choose-your-own-adventure style. You tick off broth richness, spiciness and add extras to customise it to your personal taste, which is also a fantastic idea. If you find yourself in the Nakasu area of Fukuoka then this is a must visit. You won't be disappointed, and you will be in and out in about 8 minutes with a satisfied grin on your dial.

Did you ever wonder how Japan's worst ramen tastes like? Then definitely check this place out! I've been to over 30 different ramen restaurants in Japan on my 5 week long travel, and this one wasn't only the worst tasting so far, but also the most expensive of them all! The noodles and broth are sweet, makes you wonder, if they throw sugar into it. They killed the meat twice, it was not tender at all. Other ramen places - espacially in Fukuoka, like ShinShin, or Hakata Issou - give you the option to put on your garlic, vinegar, soy sauce, ginger on your own pace, and as much as you like. At ichiran you have to choose at the beginning, any further alteration costs extra. A lot. I do wonder, why it has such good ratings. I came here expecting to have at least a decent ramen, as its Japans biggest chain, and I wanted to try it out at least once. Dot be like me. Don't try it out. Leave your money at an actual good, small, local ramen shop instead of this.

It has been a while since Fukuoka citizens have not gone to Ichiran. However, it is not that Ichiran got worse. It is because the tourists who line up day and night, the price which exceeds the average of tonkotsu ramen, and the exclusive counter(own ramen focus booth) are not for group use. However, I understand that the system which can be ordered safely even if the traveler who does not understand Japanese is popular. Ichiran's main office has a table on the first floor and a dedicated counter on the second floor. The third floor and above are offices. And it is open 24 hours. The price of 890 yen is never high from a global perspective. However, there are innumerable tonkotsu ramen that can be eaten with one coin(500 yen) in Fukuoka, and the taste is not inferior to Ichiran. However, some stores may have a strong pig smell inside the store. Also, it is not necessarily a hygienic store. If you choose Ichiran, there is no mistake.

Prepare for 1-hour waiting time but definitely worth the wait! The longest queue I've joined in. Everything is self service. Fill out an order form while waiting. The staff will always help despite the language barrier. I chose for the spicy, rich base, tonkotsu ramen with the prepared sides. It was so delicious I had to run back at the entrance to type in some more extras (albeit awkwardly, as I can feel the peering eyes from the long queue piercing my back while ordering some more and bring the little ticket back to my table and ring the call button). I added an extra egg and seaweeds and tried their signature vinegar. It was absolutely cramped walking in to my private table. But the feeling of security and anonymity once sat at the table was just what I needed. Although I still could've wanted to talk to staff to elevate my palate experience even better. I ended up ordering a takeaway package for home enjoyment.
