Ishisei — Restaurant in Kyoto

Oh my gosh! This was an amazing little gem of a find in Kyoto. Small family run restaurant. We popped in for lunch and had Chicken and egg Udon and the fresh fish of the day sushi set (bream on the day). The set meal comes with 2, 3, or 6 pieces of sushi and a big bowl of Udon noodles with 2 tempura shrimp on top. It was an absolute ton of really quality food for a very reasonable price. Note that it is CASH ONLY, so make sure you have some (though there’s a 7-11 close if you get caught out). Staying at a near by hotel, we went wandering around for a place for dinner and found this place. There weren’t many people inside as we came for an early dinner however the food was delicious.

I love udon and sushi so it was a great combination to have it in one place. The portions of noodles were fairly large which was really good, filled me up completely and we added unagi nigiri which was so delicious. I absolutely love grilled eel and these nigiri’s here were giant! Each mouthful was so mouthwatering.

Loved that there were different flavours with the udon, each bowl with deep and rich flavours that I’ve never had before.

Just off the main road this lovely authentic, restaurant has an excellent selection of dishes, at very reasonable prices. It was recommended by a few local people, and we were not disappointed. We had a fresh hot bowl Udon noodles and some sea bream sushi, which had lovely think slices of fish, a massive contrast from a lot of sushi bars. The fish is fresh daily so the special changes accordingly. The very welcoming lady, had a good grasp of English which helped with my poor Japanese, although the clientele was local we did not feel out of place.
