Ohmiya is a humble, traditional Japanese eatery tucked away in Kyoto. Nothing flashy about the exterior or interior—it’s the kind of place that locals quietly love. Tatami seating, handwritten menus on the wall, and warm service make you feel immediately at ease. It’s cozy and relaxed, perfect for a quiet meal.
I ordered the Tempura Udon and Egg-covered Tempura Donburi Set, and both were solid choices. The udon soup is light but flavorful, with a clean broth likely made from kombu and bonito. It’s gentle on the palate, and the thick udon noodles had a nice chewy bite. The tempura shrimp, though softened slightly from sitting in the soup, still had a tender texture and good flavor—clearly freshly made.
The donburi was my favorite. The shrimp tempura is simmered gently with egg and onions in a slightly sweet soy-based sauce and served over warm rice. It’s comforting and well-balanced. The egg was soft but not runny, and the rice soaked up just the right amount of sauce. Topped with seaweed strips and scallions, every bite had just enough contrast in texture and taste.
The pickled side dishes (kelp and ginger) were simple but added a nice contrast, and the small cup of hot tea was a great finish to the meal.
Prices are very reasonable, especially for Kyoto. This set cost just around ¥1,000—amazing value for the portion and quality. Everything was clean, flavorful, and prepared with care.
If you’re looking for a no-fuss, local-style meal in Kyoto—something honest and well-made—Ohmiya is worth a stop. It’s not touristy, and that’s exactly what makes it special.

Read morethe rudest service ever seen in Japan! All the waitresses are cold faced. We were sitting for 5 minutes to a very simple menu and had to ask the waitress to take our order - there were only 8 tables and 2 ladies serving. Then the beer we ordered never arrived. Had to ask her again (in Japanese) but she looked at me and walked away. I had to raise my voice and this time in English. She came unapologetically. The beer came after the Udon, and the udon came without spoons.
And written on the wall in 3 languages: At least order one dish per person...
I find the flies lingering in the room were more welcoming...

The waitresses really don’t want to be there, and they really don’t want you to be there either. You won’t get any refills on your tea. The quality of the food is mediocre and the portions are small.
