I have been trying to find a good cappuccino in Japan for a while now. This was another ¥432 hit and miss, but it's the closest I've gotten so far. Everyone in Japan seems to think a cappuccino is a latte with foam on top.
I will say that the quality of their coffee is above average, the staff are friendly and speak fluent English, and the atmosphere is quite cozy. That's all to be expected at these prices and near such a major tourist attraction.
They do make a proper cup of espresso, grinding the beans fresh, weighing (!) the portafilter, and making a good pull. I can say with certainty that their espresso technique is far better than that of every other coffee shop I have visited anywhere else in Asia.
The cappuccino itself would be 3/5 (too much milk, not enough foam, foam not firm enough). But the espresso is fantastic, and the general cafe vibe...

The first thing I had noticed was the interiors, which were spot on (working in the design industry I can definitely vouch for this) and the atmosphere was extremely warm and cozy. The coffee was fantastic, and It was a familiar feeling I had when I was in Melbourne. Later, I discovered the owner previously lived in Melbourne! Will visit again and again when I'm in Kyoto the next...
Read moreWorst experience I’ve had in Kyoto. The manager is rude and reprimands his customers. I ordered a matcha latte with soy milk and it was pre-sweetened. As I’m a diabetic, I asked if they could switch to a cafe latte as they only had pre-sweetened matcha. I returned the matcha latte and just asked to switch drinks. The manager said “maybe you should have asked if the drink was sweetened beforehand.” Matcha lattes aren’t sweetened from my prior experiences at cafes in Kyoto. The worst was the manager assumed it should be the customer’s onus to check 24/7 when they could have said the drink was pre-sweetened...
