Updated review 2025/05/20: One of my local friends recommended Kyushu Jangara to me back in 2014. I try to stop by every time I'm near one of their four Tokyo locations. My favorite is their #3, kobonshan (tonkotsu soup with fried garlic oil.) The unique customization on their menu is straight forward A-H. Basic kobonshan noodles is set H ¥900, add egg set G ¥1100, add roe set F ¥1160, add pork set E ¥1380. I always end up with everything, set A ¥1680 which is pork, with roe and egg. Their broth is what does it for me. It is hella thick and makes my eyeballs roll backward . Plus they have fresh minced garlic at the table if you are into that like I am. Add beer and the meal is perfect. As with ramen restaurants, service is, hurry up and eat because there are other people waiting outside. There is always someone else waiting outside at this location.
Original review: Very good tonkatsu soup base ramen restaurant. Located right across the street from the Harajuku train station exit, Kyushu Jangara Ramen is above the Family Mart convenient store. There will be a line on the stairs. They do have English menus on the left side when you walk in. You order at the cashier and then you will be seated. This fit my criteria for a typical ramen shop, you get in and out. Service and food prep is fast. There are bowls of ramen for under 1000 yen. My fried garlic oil tonkatsu ramen with all the options was 1430 yen and a big beer 1200 yen. They didn't have gyoza. That was disappointing. Service was as expected for a counter style...
Read moreAfter my toxic exploration in Chiba, Ikebukuro and Shibuya, I finally had my first proper meal of the day at this ramen resto for dinner. . I got Karabon Set A. With hot and spicy tonkotsu soup, the ramen included chunks of marinated meat, seasoned cod roe and flavoured boiled egg. The tonkotsu broth tasted incredibly rich and its spiciness was on point. The marinated meat was thick and tender, which melted in your mouth. The seasoned cod roe enhanced the savoury of the ramen. Appreciated the flavoured boiled egg the most. It was absolutely impressive🥹. The egg yolk was perfectly runny with a delightful alcoholic aroma. Loved the ramen a lot! . The resto was small with limited seating, so I had to wait for a while before being able to enter. The place was nicely decorated, adding some liveliness to this little shop. The seating arrangement consisted of individual seats, which was friendly to single traveller and introvert. . The resto provided menus in multiple languages, including Japanese, English, and Chinese. This made it quite tourist-friendly. Also, the staff was easygoing and accommodating. . In fact, I still rmb my first ramen experience in Japan was with this ramen brand (yet the shop I visited was in Akasaka). This time, it definitely brought back memory and made me feel very nostalgic. It was still as good...
Read moreWorst Jangara shop I’ve ever been!
I’ve been in a few of their shops (including the new vegan one upstairs) and as other ramen restaurants, they have always been super nice or at least professional.
The people working today (26th of June) from entering the store was treating us like we were garbage instead of costumers. I get that they may be tired or hate their jobs, but honestly… What the hell was that? I’ve never felt that unwelcome anywhere else.
The table was super sticky and dirty, and when I saw the ramen i wanted to cry. I tried this one before in Akasaka shop and it was super good so I was super happy about eating it again… But this one they did it fast and without any care. They only put a little tiny bit of meat, and when I told them like: “i think maybe there’s been a mistake”, they just ignored me and said it was supposed to be like this. Like come on, there’s pictures all around the restaurant and I ate that before, who are you trying to fool?
After, one of the kitchen man proceeded to do nothing but to look at me with angry face trying to intimidate me. In front of my boyfriend. Trying to pick a fight? Like, really…
(I’m sorry for writing all this drama but it felt so unbelievably unnecessary that I needed...
