We were looking for a place to eat and came across Shinjuku Makoto - a small, cozy Japanese restaurant located a few minutes away from the Hilton Shinjuku.
We booked online, but then got a confirmation email shortly after asking us to pay a deposit via paypal. Instead, we asked our concierge to call in the reservation, and were able to forego the deposit.
When we got there, it was fairly empty. It looks like there was counter seating for about 10 guests and table seating for another 10. Food was good, and you could choose from three different omakase courses. We got the signature (whichever was the most basic option) as I wasn’t too hungry and it ended up being more than enough food. At one point, we were the only two guests in the restaurant and it was lovely. Staff are friendly and it seems like they’re located in a business area, so they get a lot of foreigners for dinner on the weekends.
Around 8pm, it started to get filled with tourists. Please be mindful of wearing strong scents! I personally am very sensitive to perfumes and colognes and I find that tourists will wear really strong fragrances, which is not ideal esp in small shared spaces! I started feeling nauseated, so we quickly finished and left. This is not the staff’s fault or problem, but I do wish visitors were more aware of...
Read moreThe omakase experience at Shinjuku Makoto is a culinary journey that balances artistry and flavor with precision and care. Nestled in the heart of Shinjuku, this intimate sushi bar exudes an understated elegance, allowing the food to take center stage.
From the first course, it’s evident that Chef Makoto’s dedication to his craft is unparalleled. The meal begins with seasonal appetizers—each bite a harmonious blend of texture and umami. The sashimi course is a revelation: impeccably fresh cuts of otoro, uni, and kampachi are presented like jewels, their flavors speaking to the quality of the ingredients.
The sushi courses, prepared à la minute, are the highlight. Each piece is a masterpiece of technique, with warm, seasoned rice that complements the fish rather than overpowering it. Standouts include the melt-in-your-mouth chu-toro and the subtly smoky aburi nodoguro.
While undeniably a splurge, Shinjuku Makoto’s omakase is worth every yen for those seeking an unforgettable dining experience steeped in tradition...
Read moreDisappointment. First we came way too late for our reservation and they were still able to accomodate us even though it was fully booked. Thank you very much and apologies for being late
Rating the Food and the service however did not meet our expectations at all. The nigiri sushis come with a rice that constantly falls apart, lacks a bit of taste and flavor. The fish was good itself, but could have been presented with a twist or refinement to make it more appealing in terms of taste.
We werent asked if we have allergys or do not like or if we cant eat particular food which was the case. My partner did not like squid (ika) and got served it right away.
Glasses were not refilled, service was not proactive at all, you had to look out for drinks.
Staff overall is very friendly and polite.
All in All, especially due to these good recommendations from others it was a big disappointment for us, sorry to say that. Wishing the team...
