Taishū Sushi Sakaba MENOJI — Restaurant in Yokohama

After getting off the subway at Sakuragicho, found this retro-style restaurant in the underground shopping arcade. Its old-school Showa-era atmosphere immediately caught my eye, so I decided to give it a try.

The place was super busy, and it was hard to get the staff’s attention at first. But after patiently waiting by the entrance, they finally noticed me and welcomed me inside.

The restaurant isn’t very big and feels a bit old and worn, but in a charming, nostalgic way. It’s like stepping back in time to the Showa period—but with the smell of delicious food in the air.

Speaking of food—it was amazing! Fresh fish, tasty sushi, and surprisingly low prices. I couldn’t believe the value for money. On top of that, the staff were friendly, fun, and full of energy, which made the experience even better.

The best part? The more you drink, the cheaper your drinks get! It’s a dream come true for anyone who loves to drink. What a fun and clever idea!

A little difficult to find but well worth seeking out. This bustling establishment is in the bottom basement of a building across from the Sakugaricho train station exit. It is off the tourist path and was filled with locals enjoying themselves. No English signage. No problem. The staff helped us order by pointing to dishes others were eating. We ended up eating the freshest, tastiest sushi and sashimi we have ever had. The tempura was crispy and not the least bit greasy. The beer was ice cold and served promptly. We were served by not only our waitress but by a team of gracious hosts that even included the chef who delivered our tempura hot from the kitchen. We were amazed when the bill arrived. We like to find small places away from the city and this was a jackpot! Underground restaurant in the corner with limited seating. My family of 4 got there near closing (last call) and they were able to seat us at the sushi bar. They did not know much English & we used translator to communicate. Everyone was extremely friendly - the wait staff, the sushi chefs and even the locals sitting at the bar trying to make conversation with us. The menu is only in Japanese.
