Maolin Tavern — Restaurant in Luang Prabang

Amazing little gem with great food and wine, as well as good selection of beer. As a city with great wine, we were sold once we saw the free cheese and cold cuts with any bottle sign! (And it wasn’t burger cheese and reconstituted ham...)

We passed by in the evening and this place has great atmosphere with ambient lighting, and quirky decor. You can join the buzz and sit at the bar or choose another cool corner in which to chill. The menu offers both smaller bar snack plates and olives, or more filling and unique mains so much so we decided to stay for dinner. This is a beautifully welcome respite if you’re a Westerner like myself, missing a piece of home. Or just wine and decent pasta... (Best carbonara I would feel comfortable trying in Asia yet.)

I’d have gone back to try more food had we found it sooner. Definitely...

Revised after the restaurant owner's response:

I ordered a non-alcoholic beer, as listed on the menu, which stated it contained 0% alcohol. However, it turned out to actually have 3-5% alcohol content. The menu was incorrect, yet the owner claims it was my fault. What a tactic!

I requested a fish salad without chili. They agreed, but the salad I received was excessively spicy. I couldn't eat it. This differs from the papaya salad the owner mentions in his reply.

The papaya salad did have only one chili, as we requested, so that part was fine. However, the salad had a foul odor, likely due to the fish sauce or shrimp paste.

I advise avoiding establishments like this, where the owners not only make minor errors but also shift the blame onto their customers.

I’ve been to this place twice. The food was delicious, but I chose this bar because of the pool table. On the second floor, there is a game room. The second time was ridiculous. We wanted to invite our friends and play pool. But they didn’t let us play in the beginning, then allowed us to play only 2 games, and then pushed us to leave the room with pool due to “renovation”. To be honest, we didn’t care a lot about the little mess around, we were ready to order more beer and peacefully play, but the staff preferred to lose clients instead.
