Gelato del Lao — Restaurant in Luang Prabang

I tried all three ice cream spots on the main road in Luang Prabang, sampling coconut ice cream at each. Here’s how they stack up:

1️⃣ First Stop: A small stand further down the street on the same side as Gelato del Lao. The cost was 25,000 kip compared to 40,000 elsewhere, but it showed. The cone was a standard commercial one—not the nice crunchy cookie cone you'd hope for—and the flavor was disappointing. I couldn’t even detect any coconut.

2️⃣ Second Stop: The “high-end” 3 Nagas Hotel, which claims to be the oldest ice cream shop in town. A single scoop set me back 60,000 kip, and while it was better than the first, it still missed the mark. The ice cream tasted more like milk than coconut, and the sugar cone was unimpressive.

3️⃣ Third Stop – The Winner: Gelato del Lao. They gave me a generous scoop served on a crunchy, delicious cone. The gelato itself was bursting with flavor, and I could actually taste and feel the real coconut in it. Absolute perfection!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for Gelato del Lao—it’s hands down the best ice cream in Luang Prabang....

I ordered one scoop of lime lemongrass sorbetti for 40,000 kip. It didn't taste anything like I expected it to, so much so that I would say the server gave me a different flavor, most likely rum raisin. Otherwise, I think the quality of the ingredients is probably good, the selection of flavors (about a dozen each of gelato and sorbetti) is good, the price is a tad touristy (gelato around super touristy Pub Street in Siem Reap costs $1.50 or 33,000 kip and local, home made ice cream in Luang Prabang goes for 10,000 kip) and the ambiance is pleasant. Fast forward a bit. I guess that initial mix-up was a one-off. I've been back a few times and gotten the flavors I've requested. On the downside some of the flavors I've wanted to order have not been available. Fast forward a bit more. I'd rather buy local ice cream for 10,000 kip. So ended my patronage of this...

외국인 동양인을 비하하는 아이스크림 매장. 카운터에서 고객응대도 없어서 아몬드 1개, 오레오 1개를 주문하였지만, 아이스크림 1개만 제공. 라오스이지만, 라오스어로 주문해도 무시함. 다시 재주문후 라오스어로 문의해도 무시하고 비웃음. 서양인에게는 관대하고 동양인은 무시하는 것을 루앙프라방 여러곳에서 느낄수있다. 한국인이 운영하는 매장도 같다. 라오스어로 대화를 요청해도 끝까지 영어로 응대하고 이곳이 라오스인지 어디인지 알기가 어렵다. 리뷰를 보면 알수있다. 많은 아시아인들이 여행후 방문하였지만, 아시아 차별을 느끼는 가게. 그리고 문제를 요청하면 점원은 경찰을 불러 고객에게 위해를 준다. 이곳은 정말 최악이다.

Một cửa hàng kem hạ thấp người nước ngoài và người châu Á. Tại quầy không có nhân viên chăm sóc khách hàng nên tôi gọi 1 quả hạnh nhân và 1 bánh Oreo nhưng chỉ được cung cấp một cây kem. Đó là Lào, nhưng ngay cả khi bạn đặt hàng bằng tiếng Lào, họ cũng bỏ qua. Ngay cả khi tôi đặt hàng lại và hỏi thăm bằng tiếng Lào, họ vẫn lờ tôi đi và cười nhạo tôi.
