On Tuesday, August 12th, after breakfast in Kaunas, we headed to Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, for some rest and sightseeing. After a walk through the city center, we decided to have dinner and try some local cuisine. We chose what we thought was a “safe bet” – Bernelių Užeiga Restaurant.
The interior welcomed us with a rustic style of brick arches and walls, heavy wooden furniture, and embroidered tablecloths. It looked like a traditional countryside tavern, even though it’s located right in the city center. The atmosphere was pleasant, though somewhat dark.
At the entrance, a sign asked guests to wait to be seated. We did so, but in vain. For several minutes, a waiter passed by us multiple times, ignoring us completely, as if we were invisible. The attitude felt like something straight out of the socialist era.
On his fourth pass, without any greeting, he finally asked if we wanted a table for two. When we said yes, he simply replied there were no free tables – despite the fact that we clearly saw at least one empty table for three or four. His tone was arrogant, with no apology and no attempt to offer any alternative.
After such a “welcome,” we decided to leave without ordering anything. Sadly, our hopes of trying traditional Lithuanian dishes in this restaurant were left unfulfilled. Disappointed, we went off to find another place to eat.
Because of this, I cannot comment on the food or drinks. Our visit ended before we even got a chance to look at the menu, let alone try cepelinai or the cold beet soup šaltibarščiai, which we had enjoyed the day before in another restaurant.
The arrogant and dismissive attitude of the staff was so unpleasant that we left immediately and rated the place with one star on Google Maps. Such behavior is unacceptable and shows that even in modern Lithuania, you can still encounter service that ignores and disrespects its guests.
This experience unfortunately ruined our evening, even though we had a very good one at another branch of the same chain in Kaunas. It shows how much service quality can vary within one brand. Overall, our visit to Bernelių Užeiga in Vilnius was a complete failure. Despite the nice and traditional look of the place, the unprofessional and arrogant staff completely spoiled it....
Read moreBeautiful place, very cozy location. Food very tasty. But I came at 15.00 I have ordered something to drink.. my drinks arrived short after 15.30.. When they arrived I have ordered the food. I tried to order a beef soup in the bread without fried bacon and traditional dumplings with cheese filling also without bacon decoration.. I asked the waitress to get meal without pork meat simply. She smiled and walked away like ok. Everything is in order.. later she came it was almost 16 o'clock and she said I have to choose something else because everything I choosed is with pork meat. I don't understand why she couldn't say it directly that my order is including pork meat. Because in menu wasn't about pork meat any one word. But also as waitress she should know at least what's in their typical Lithuanian dishes 🤦🤦 I had really lust to stand up and go. But I have give it chance so she suggested me dumplings with quark filling. They were really delicious. But if I don't call her I would be probably sitting there until now and waiting for order or to pay.. service there is very very poor. I left at approximately around 16:30.. so 30min for the drinks and more than one hour for the food. So I can't suggested you this restaurant if you want to eat something in normal timeframe. If you have half day time to sit and chill then go and enjoy. I don't know how much waitresses are there but the owner should maybe think about to hire more personal or try to think about to hire more competent staff. Because there was not so...
Read moreWe had an extremely bad experience here. We came to have lunch here on a Saturday afternoon, the place was full, but there was one table on the terrace which a blonde waitress offered us and we sat there. Since we were with a 1-year old baby, we claimed a kid’s chair and this girl promised to bring it. Should I say that we never saw her again? Anyway we occupied the table, the baby stayed in his stroller. We’ve been waiting for 30 min to place our order, but the staff pretended not to see us at all. The brown-haired waitress meanwhile took orders from 5 (!) tables around us, but refused to approach our table. A Lithuanian-speaking woman near us even argued with her, but this didn’t help. The waitress said “I don’t care, this is not my table” and vanished. The nice woman tried to help us again and called another waiter, but he ignored us as well. The most funny thing was that a very wealthy-looking Spanish guy was sitting nearby and 3 (!) different waitresses served him and were running really fast to please him. We left hungry without even placing an order. In our hometown Kaunas we often go to Bernelių Užeiga and never met such attitude. Despite it’s overpriced the food is really delicious. But this restaurant in Vilnius shocked us with its...
