8 Moralities Vegetarian Restaurant, so named from the 8 Confucian values, is exemplary. After the first bite I wanted to complete the menu, the food was divine.. Being a tofu guy I got the sweet and sour ‘fish’ made from layers of tofu ‘skin’ - not too dissimilar from the aburaage in Inarizushi. It was soft, slightly chewy and falls apart in your mouth. The sweet and sour is perfectly balanced with a nice hint of chili with the rest of the dish comprising fresh tomato, cucumber and green peppers. The rest of the menu looked splendid - they do Hericium mushrooms in a few dishes also and I most certainly intend to return. Staff were kind and appreciative I had made the trip out, I had spoke with the lady who served me and she recommended some of her other favorite vegetarian restaurants in Penang and had no problem explaining the process of how they made various menu items as the curiosity was overwhelming regarding the multitude of flavor layering. As an accompaniment, I had a cold Chinese tea that was suitably refreshing. The whole meal came to only RM18, less than a drink in a lot of places. As an addendum, the restaurant was spotless, the locals eating there were a friendly welcoming bunch, my meal arrived in the blink of an eye, my server spoke impeccably and the portion was large enough that I took the remainder as a take out. Absolutely worth the grab out, if you’re a vegetarian in Penang, you owe yourself a visit to 8 Moralities...
Read moreThe only headache I have is the parking. But should you be lucky to find one, this place is not bad. I wouldn't call their choices extensive but it can definitely stand on its own.
The petai was fresh but average and the only reason I didn't like it was that the taste was flat and the gravy a little watery. The rendang was fortunately a better attempt. I liked the thick gravy with its flavorful spicy taste. The satay was also an eye opener. Good sauce and good chew on the 'meat'. Perfectly delicious.
I also found the brinjal yummy. Cooked so well that the brinjal had this 'bite' yet soft enough to absorb the flavor of the thin layer of gravy sticking to it. The tofu was soft and the mushroom gravy complimented the tofu superbly. Well salted gravy to balance the heavy mushroom aroma that mixes with the tofu well.
In short. Good food. Great tasting. Fresh ingredients....
Read moreOne of the best vegetarian Bak Kut Teh I ever had . Even my non-vege friends said it was good. Despite the price, I still think its worth it. It has a lot of raw ingredients , different types of mushrooms instead of expecting a lot of fake meats.
The Mapo Tofu for me was delicious as well. So was the butter fried oyster mushrooms. We ordered several dishes and the food were really good as if you could feel the chefs put their hearts in making them.
The environment was somewhat archaic, giving out a nostalgic vibe. I really like how the menu was written on wooden plates as decor on the walls.
Would definitely visit the place again to try out other dishes. Definitely one of the rare gems in Penang. Hope their food always keep up to...
