On April 13th at about 6.45pm we went to this popular Hainanese cuisine restaurant where we read good reviews. We were 6 of us but 2 of us arrived first and we asked for table of 6 persons and a male gentleman informed us that we need to have 2 tables one for 2 persons and the other for 4 persons and we were happy about it. About 10 mins the young man from the cashier I suppose he is also part of the owner family came over to us and asked us how long more we have to wait for our other 4 friends to arrive. We could see that there was 3 persons walked in during that time and I believe he was trying to take the table away for my 4 other friends. What we were disappointed is that when we came in we wanted a table of 6 and we were shown the two tables. We are already there just waiting for our friends to join us. Mind you the restaurant where the location is located is very difficult to find a parking space and we have to at least take 2 or 3 rounds before we found a parking lot. Our biggest upset is this young owner who handled us is very rude and as if does not welcome us .He was rudely saying to us "if by 10 minutes your 4 friends dont come I will release the table?" Release what table ? We wanted a table to seat 6 people and we were there waiting for my friends. How stupid could this young owner be ? Release the table so that means my 4 friends wont have a table and cant join us so how are we going to have dinner together? If that is the case that means two of us also cannot dined in ! This shows how this young does not use logic and it is cases like this making customer like us shocked as we were looking forward to a great meal at this Koon Pastry Cafe. This really upset us and I hope this review will at least help to correct his attitude to his customers. This young man is not suitable to handle customers better stay at the cashier and collect payment. Better the elder Owner be at the front as they seem more understanding and helped to ease the situation. If your business is so super good you also cannot be so arrogant. BTW this young owner did not even come over to say sorry or take trouble to talk to us. The 6 of us had our dinner and the food was good but sadly the young owner attitude must change in...
Read moreWe went to Khoon Pastry House several times, the other time I found a strand of hair in my food. It's upsetting that there is some hygiene issues, although some of the food genuinely tasted good (e.g., shepherd pie, spring roll). Anyways, I let it go previously.
Went there again for lunch today, it was full so we had to wait to be seated. While waiting, we told them that we wanted to order first, but they replied that they will only take customer's orders only when we are seated.
After waiting for about 5-10 minutes, a group of 4 came in and waited for seats after us. However, one of the guy told the owner that they would like to order to reserve 3 chicken rice and owner said ok.
After we were seated (the group of 3 still waiting), and we wanted to order chicken rice, but were told "finished". Then, we complained, "How come we came first but denied order and people who came later gets the chicken rice?" Instead of apologizing to us for people to jump queue & doing something about it, the owner replied, "We are not your stomach's worm, how can we know you also want chicken rice?" Such a low EQ, RUDE response and really BAD SERVICE as they just ignored our complaints and did nothing to ease the situation!!
For the price they are charging, might as well...
Read moreIt would have otherwise been a decent night out, except for that piece of stale chocolate cake with rancid cream topping which we ordered for dessert. To make matters worse, the Proprietor insisted the cake was good despite seeing us just taking only a little bite of the cake and leaving the rest untouched, never offered any replacement and insisted on a full charge. I’m appalled by the PR exhibited by such an old establishment, sadly, this frank feedback has to come from a Penangite, who had patronised them on numerous occasions.
Here’s my full verdict Food (except for the unfortunate stale cake) - generally decent and bearing the old world taste. Hainanese chicken chop gravy is fragrant with flavours of mixed herbs, but a tad sweet. Chicken rice was good, chicken was tender and moist. Spring rolls good, not oily but wud be better if they have added crab meat. Service - Average, no serviettes offered. Desserts - better recheck the freshness of the cakes in the glass display cabinet, Warning, possibly not fresh...
