A huge cafeteria-style dim sum restaurant offering decent chinese dishes at generally pocket-friendly prices. There are various 'stations' - from drinks/tea (also refill of hot water for tea), to one that serves up made-to-order hot food and noodles/fried rice, to self-help dim sum section i.e. you take a tray and queue to take what you want such as steamed items to fried stuffs, including condiments like sauces. Service staff are quite friendly as well.
Food-wise, most of the dishes are nicely-executed. Some are a let-down but there are surprisingly good ones like the fried yam fritters (stuffed with meat), fried shrimps in beancurd sheets, char siew baos, fried noodles, egg tarts, porridge, chee cheong fun, har gao and braised chicken feet. Do take note that some of the fried food have been in the warmer cabinet for some time (as they are pre-fried) so they may not be crispy anymore nor hot (depending on the turnover or its popularity also). So choose wisely hahaha... I usually skip the chicken wings, fried carrot cake and popiah...
The dining area is big so I believe can seat up to hundreds of people at any one time, which also means the place is very noisy and space between tables/seats can be alittle too tight for comfort when it's operating at full-house. It's hard to hold a conversation with those you are eating. Although queues start to form almost daily even before the restaurant is opened, the line moves quite fast IMO. Basically you just go up to the front desk and get a queue number and wait for yours to be called. There's a tent set up in front of the restaurant to shelter you from the sun or rain but you still get drenched when it's pouring heavily.
A fuss-free dim sum place popular with both locals and tourists. Not the cheapest nor the best in Georgetown but good enough to satisfy your dim sum craving. It's opposite the New Lane Night Street Food Market and there are some convenience shops nearby.
Parking can be an issue so best to...
Read moreI m a dim sum lover. I had the opportunity to try 3 other dim sum’s restaurants in Penang prior to this place. Non of the earlier 3 dim sum restaurants generate such negative vibes. (The earlier 3 restaurants visited are Tai Tong, Fu Er Dai & Yong Pin)
Honestly this is the worst dim sum restaurant to have dim sum in Penang in comparison.
The whole environment just set you into a very negative vibes from the start to the end.
Long queue were formed the moment we approached the restaurant. Fortunately, there were only 2 of us and straight away, we were directed to a table without any chairs.
Then we proceeded to queue up to pick our food. Food were displayed openly without any coverage. Crowds gathered at the queue talking down to the food. No hygiene practiced at all.
Next, a lady stands by the end of the queue to account for what you have taken and thereafter, we have join another queue to take our condiment for our dish. There was no proper queuing system in this station. Everyone seems to cutting the queue to get what they want.
Towards the end, after making payments I returned to our table to finished some remaining food, a rude lady starts to clear our table indirectly tell us to leave.
Food were below average and the price is higher than the other 3 restaurants that we have visited earlier.
For the amount that we have paid and the experiences with this place, I truly do not recommend that you visit this place. This definitely the first and my last time with this canteen lookalike and overly...
Read moreWent at 1030am on a weekday. Was waiting patiently as the staff was serving a group of ladies in front of me. Then a prc gentleman just walked ahead of me and asked for a seat. The male staff, knowing that I was there waiting right in front of counter, right in front of him, gave him a queue number. I had to then inform the staff I am waiting as well, and then be given a queue number.. lack of the eq to provide me with a queue number first when the prc guy cut the queue.
Food wise, it was okay. It's my 2nd visit, a great place to get your dim sum craving fixed. Not absolutely fantastic, but it is okay, the comfortable fuss free environment makes up for it.
Siew mai was cold, but har gao was warm and good. Bean curd roll has good amount of filling. Vege with stuffing was okay too. I like the char siew bao the most, I ordered as a takeaway and ate it on the go as I was full from the meal.
Felt that siew mai was a little fake and rubbery. The skin was dry. Love the pu er tea, u can just take your time to sip it as that's what most of the locals do, taking their own sweet time enjoying their breakfast at the eatery.
Overall was 27rm, I felt it was reasonable. I'll still visit again on my next trip when I feel like having some dim sum.
Just make sure to approach the staff at the front desk immediately and ask for a queue number. Don't be silly like me, patiently and nicely waiting to be served. Some tourists are bolder and...
