Barra, Kuala Lumpur, a Spanish affair
Opened about 5 month ago, this fairly new, but now well established eatery is a great addition to KL’s vibrant dining scene!
The owners foresight, to delve into this concept has truly established them as restaurateurs of the first order! Attention to detail in almost every aspect, comes through during this wonderful dinner experience!
The menu featuring many of the classics and of course some chef’s specials, leaves little to be desired! The chef who hailed from Barcelona, Spain is the real McCoy and evident in every morsel we consumed! Of course not every ingredient will ever match the quality of the Spanish markets, but Chef does an amazing job with what he is able to source!
On the Beverage side, the Cava, Larus, Xarello. A Pinot Noir sparkling stood out exceptionally well, truly enjoyed this one (never had it prior), the red an Amon Ra of the 2006 vintage, (if I recall correctly) was an exceptionally full bodied enjoyable and fitting with most of the dishes we savoured!
Food wise, of course the Jamin Iberico was hitting the right notes, the Grilled Padron Peppers were perfect to get us started!
We shared most of the food, and had a marvellous time!
Fresh oysters from France & Ireland were perfect, (special request from one in our group) followed by the Pan Con Tomato, a tad soggy for my taste, but still ok!
The Scallops, lightly roasted were well presented and had that wonderful creamy finish to it, which went down well with us!
The Roasted Seabass, a special of the Chef, was absolutely perfect, cooked to the point, and the salsa verde complemented the fish really well!
The roasted suckling pig, Spanish style, was delicious, although these are of Vietnamese origins as it’s virtually impossible to get the Spanish ones in, but the cooking simply perfect, great flavours, albeit a tad soft! Loved the crackling which was ever so tender!
As our host still had a craving, he ordered the stuffed Cannelloni, which hit the spot! Filled with Chicken and veggies, a delightful morsel!
For the dessert we were treated to a most perfect burned cheese cake, as well as Crema Catalana, this wonderful caramelised custard! Pure joy!
Finishing off with a decent cup of Espresso it was an enjoyable evening of dining please and friendship!
Service was decent, although one feels its work in progress, but it appears to be getting there!
Definitely a place to recommend!

Read moreI have visited Barra twice, first with a friend & 2nd time for my boyfriend’s birthday. I am pleased with the food, there is a wide selection of Spanish cuisines & felt it was well curated with many flavours you’d normally won’t taste in usual dishes. There was also a QR to view the images of the food!
However the service for the price & atmosphere is not up to par & quite bad. Upon arrival, we were not greeted with a welcome or a smile, just straight to asking if we have a reservation. And when asked if able to sit at the dining table, staff barely made eye contact & mumbled that dining tables were for 3 or more guest not entertaining us at all, however throughout the meal there were many empty tables available to seat. When seated, it was very hard to get the staff’s attention to order or when needed help, even though there was more than enough on the ground. Most of the signaling came from the kitchen staff noticing we were left unattended. My first experience there, I had ordered the tenderloin in medium rare, but it came in well done. The waiter came back with an annoyed look “you ordered well done” without giving any room for clarification. When leaving, there wasn’t any thank you or goodbye from staff stationed at the door, it felt very unwelcoming 😂
Read some previous reviews & also noticed same sentiments on issues with service. It’s such a shame cause the food is really good, however service means just as much for a pleasant experience. Would come back again however do wish the service...

Out of the six restaurants I tried, this was by far the best in terms of authentic Spanish cuisine. Many others left me disappointed, but this place truly stood out.
The octopus (pulpo) was cooked to perfection—tender, not dry, and served with a touch of chimichurri that added a unique twist. The Basque cheesecake was absolutely incredible, one of the closest I’ve had to the authentic version from the Basque Country—and as a Basque (Vasco) myself, I can say this with confidence.
A special mention goes to Sandra, the waiter, who made the experience even more memorable. She greeted me warmly as I arrived, smiled throughout the service, and paid great attention to every detail. When I hesitated to order the cheesecake (since it’s from my region and I’d naturally be the toughest critic), she reassured me with confidence that it would match my expectations—and she was right!
The chorizo con queso was good, but slightly too sweet for my taste. While the caramelized onions were flavorful, I felt they overshadowed the chorizo, which should be the star of the dish. For Spaniards like me, chorizo is something exceptional and deserves to take center stage.
Aside from that minor critique, the overall experience was fantastic. The service, thanks to Sandra, was exceptional. I’d definitely return. Highly recommended!
This version highlights Sandra’s excellent service and incorporates your experience with the cheesecake naturally. Let me know if you’d like any further...
