Food here is decent, though not fantastic. Had the multi course dinner in a private room. Standout dishes included the starter soup made from shark bones, which similar to ramen broth from all the natural collagen with strong umami flavours; the garlic abalone with scallop, which was fresh and fragrant (though not properly cleaned as there were bits of shell still in it which made for a crunchy chew); and the whole roast suckling pig which was crispy and fatty and came with a nice sweet bean sauce dip.
The other dishes didn't fare so well: The steamed fish although was nicely seasoned, was sadly overcooked so was slightly tough. Same went for the roast duck leg; it was next to impossible cutting through it, even with the provided knife and fork, and chewing it was a jaw workout. The char siew rice was so-so, good in that it was nice and fatty, but too salty and hard. The lard bits provided were also overdone so had become too hard, thus becoming too painful to crunch through, and the accompanying fried egg was overcooked and rubbery. The vegetable dish of the night was the braised black fungus and spinach, and that was done in the typical banquet style i.e. drenched gloopy cornstarch-ridden brown gravy.
The desserts managed to be worse. We were served the hashima (a.k.a. frog fallopian tube fat) tong yuen in a young coconut. You could taste the coconut water which I presume they boiled it in, but this was overly sweet, like drinking melted coconut candy. And they didn't use the premium hashima, so the ones in the soup were tiny and very thin. There was also the lotus buns, shaped like peaches she filled with lotus paste. What I had initially thought was sweet, was cancelled immediately by the lotus paste. This was tooth-achingly sweet. It was hard to finish one without gulping down a whole lot of Chinese tea.
Despite the disappointing food, service here is top class. Our drinks were mindfully refilled, plates and cutlery changed as soon as they got too dirty, and condiments like the pickled green chilies and fresh red chillies restocked when low. There was even a television (I think for karaoke) and a private toilet in our room.
I'm giving this place 3 stars because at an establishment such as this, you come not just for the food but usually to celebrate an event or attend a function. So to me, there are other factors which need to be considered. So I would say, do come here, just make sure you pick your dishes wisely. And personally, I would stay away from the set menus like the one we had, so you can have more freedom to choose their...
Read moreLast visited this restaurant multiple years ago. It was before they relocated to this massive building. Arrived at about 12pm for a lunch appointment. First thing that is noticable is parking. It was fortunate that I was there for lunch. I dread to imagine the mayhem if it was a dinner function. Coupled with the narrow roads and proximity to the construction worksite of TRX, it is quite a turn off.
Food wise was acceptable. Had a combination of dimsum and fried noodles. Dimsum is ok with very fresh prawn fillings. The restaurant chef probably wanted to add creativity or twist to some of the dimsums with the hamsui kok shaped as a carrot (poc attached) and creamy custard buns had added swirling design. Traditionalist like myself may not like it. The order of hokkien noodles was a letdown though. It was a far cry if one was to compare to the better and cheaper offers by the streets. Siew yok is very good with a good balance of meat and fats but the char siew was a tad too lean hence making it hard. Quality of chinese tea was good.
Service was top notch. The Captain that served my table was good supported by a few efficient waiters. Seating arrangement was comfortable with a good distance between tables. However, as with all chinese restaurants, do expect noise levels to be a tad high.
Overall, I am rating this dining experience with 4 stars knocking off 1 star due to shortcomings that I...
Read moreHad wedding luncheon here, food was so so despite the manager or captain being confident in their old tastebuds. Service worse, if possible I would give no star. I had 2-3 people talking to me at the same time and they don’t talk to each other so information scattered. Initially say this can that can without charges, ended up, chargeable in the bill. Atmosphere was warm despite raining outside. Maybe just them being stingy and calculative.
Lastly, I had the option of going for cheaper menu, but was convinced that it would be value for money if choose more expensive menu. Unfortunately I didn’t experience value for money, more like cina apek restaurant trying to scam your money.
Finally, came the bill, the beer bill was minimum order at 120 bottle with RM18.8 per bottle. I left with only 1 crate but my guests didn’t drink much that day. Even more fishy, the bill they didn’t even chop it so most likely the managers and workers had some underhand dealing as well. They don’t allow me to pay by anything except cash for the beer. Cleaning fee rm300? I am like wtf for a glass of wine cup that broke? Over charging as usual. Oh I had small buffet for Muslim people, they charge as well even if it’s not their food. I didn’t had to get them to serve, clean, or touch the food.
They even charge 2% for credit card transaction.
Overall shitty. And I STRONGLY don’t...
