I went there to try their Egg Breakfast, which was available for vegetarians. I opted for scrambled eggs and was expecting the dish to come with a of slice bread. Instead, I was surprised with lovely four slices of bread , with a thin layer of butter on it. The bakery side caught my eyes, and in addition I had their Danish Pudding, which was well baked and the pudding was not overwhelming sweet. To quench my thirst for the morning, their imported orange juice has been just the right combination, although I wish I had a second serving of the same.
For the first time in my 18 months of exploring various cafes in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, TTDI, Damansara and Mont Kiara, I have not come across a more friendlier cafe than Der Backmeister @ TTDI. Christian and his wife, being the owners, just make the visit so pleasant. Their team ushers you in, addresses you politely and starts with a welcoming greeting. You then browse thru the menu, walk up to the counter to place your order with payment, then head back to you table to wait for your treat!
The cafe can be busy with regulars, chatty like chirping birds and you just ponder, how good life can be with a good bakery to fill up your stomach with a well proportioned meal. Most of all, their food and drinks pricing is very reasonable.
I enjoy my bread slices and always venture to find bakers, where the offer an authentic variety to buy and take home. At Der Backmeister @ TTDI, you can do that and with so many choices on their shelves, you feel like a lost child who had found rewarding food.
I did ask Christian why they are not serving sauerkraut, being a staple food in German dishes, that I personally enjoy. I was told that they used to serve before, but some clients were complaining about the 'smell'. I was indeed shocked, and it looks like their voices were effective enough to get it off the menu. Looks like I need to make some at home instead.
If anything, I do hope that there will be a bit more options for vegetarians in the menu, and one of it is a bread basket with mix cuts from the selection of breads and rolls. That will indeed be a wonderful experience for breakfast, brunch or even lunch.
Very rarely do you hear at a restaurant or a cafe, where they say, " thank you and see you again soon"... you hear that echoing at this place time to time. Now, that is what I call a homely cafe that makes your day! Many other cafes should learn a thing or two from Der Backmeister @ TTDI about customer relationship...
Read moreLocated in a bustling but pretty and shady part of TTDI der backmeister is realistically about as authentic for this sort of Germanic cuisine as you're going to get in Malaysia. Perhaps If I was German I might be more critical but as I'm not to my British eyes both in terms of its appearance and the food was pretty much the real article - I believe it's owned by a German too.
To drink we both had flat whites which to my slight surprise were excellent and decent size. Sometimes in a bakery type place the quality of the coffee is secondary and it shows but not here - I was impressed by this alone.
I think I possibly ordered slightly the wrong thing in a camembert and apple sandwich as for me camembert is better melted whereas you don't really toast German bread. Also it's an expensive ingredient here so the portion was a bit smaller than I hoped for in terms of filling - probably to bring it in at a reasonable price point it has to be slightly smaller though. Nothing wrong with it by any means because it was undeniably good but my wife's avocado and egg sandwich I found tastier and bigger plus I think cheaper also. Personal taste though partly of course.
We ordered some cranberry bread to takeaway which was delicious - there's a very big and appealing looking range of breads and pastries etc to take home. The cinnamon roll looked incredible and I think was only 7rm - will be returning to try that with a coffee sometime for sure - my wife liked the look of the chocolate croissant which was also huge.
Service was noticeably excellent - seemed like a well trained and happy team. Though I've known about this place for years was my first time but I think a lot of people there are regulars and even at 8:30 on a Saturday it was busy. However this gave it a lovely, friendly atmosphere I think. Food came out quickly and basically at the same time. Price wise for bigger food reasonable for the product and area most sandwiches around 25rm and coffee 12rm - other options range from teens to around 40rm for biggest breakfast though that looked incredible - perhaps I'll come here really hungry one day and order that.
Parking is mad round there especially on a weekend we came at 8:30 and there were just a few spaces left by 9am you'll either need luck or to walk a bit unless you're getting dropped off or lucky enough to live nearby. Overall brilliant place and I look forward to returning for that cinnamon roll...
Read moreDer Backmeister is a lovely new German cafe and bakery, facing a leafy green area in TTDI along Persiaran Zaaba. My husband and I were on the way to the dry cleaners when we spotted this little gem of a cafe; A great addition to an area already growing with interesting independent food shops, Der Backmeister is nestled between Homst Chinese Muslim restaurant, Juicy Bits fruit shop and Coffee Amo cafe. With a range of different breads and pastries, they also serve halal cold cuts with their breakfast and lunch offerings.
Although the cafe was busy on a weekend, it didn't take us long to find seats as there was plenty of room both indoor and outdoor. We were greeted by very friendly staff who informed us that the cafe had only been open for 10 days so they only accept cash for now, however will accept cards soon. Delectable-looking local breads invite you to sample, while their wooden tables, benches and gingham table runners provided a cosy feel reminiscent of authentic German bakeries we had visited while in Berlin.
My husband ordered their Backmeister Breakfast which consisted of a range of cold cuts, a bread basket, cheese and jam (RM23) while I ordered a dish containing a thick cut of turkey ham, a large sunny side up egg, multigrain rye bread, cucumber and tomato (RM18). There was a good selection of different breads and rolls in the bread basket, he enjoyed his brunch thoroughly as it reminded him of the eastern european fare he used to have back home. I myself found my meal to be incredibly pleasant, the thick-cut turkey ham paired beautifully with the egg and that delicious multigrain rye. They would usually let you choose your own although I would highly recommend this multigrain bread. I also realised that they usually serve this dish with chicken meatloaf but they had run out during our visit, certainly something to sample next time. Their coffee was also excellent, strong and well-rounded at RM9 each.
Overall we had a lovely experience at this cafe, a great new addition to the area and we will certainly...
