Gavel offers quite a mixed bag of authentic 'western' food comprising a range of salads, pastas, pies, fish and chips and roasts. They mentioned that they have the best Sunday Roast but too bad, I don't usually come here on Sundays cos I am still reminiscing Yorkshire Puddings.
Their menu is quite pricey thus we went for their set lunch which is quite reasonable. Option to have either two-course or three-course. Two courses - you choose either starter or dessert.
Among us, we ordered:
No options were provided for the dessert and they had steamed pear with vanilla ice-cream and raspberry puree.
I had the chicken breast and although the portion was decent, the meat was slightly on the dry side. It was very well-seasoned nevertheless and the creamed spinach was perfect. Dish would be great if the chicken was juicier.
Colleagues had the pasta and fish and chips. Pasta was alright, cooked al-dente and not overly seasoned. Fish and chips were large, portion wise. The batter was crispy, not overly oily, and the size of fish was decent too. However, colleague mentioned that she felt the dish to be a bit cloying towards the end.
Dessert was above average, nothing to shout about. All of our ice cream melted and would have preferred that it came more 'solid'. The pear was alright though, not sweet (which is what I prefer) cos it probably show that they don't douse it with sweeteners.
Overall, decent place for lunch. Something different beyond the usual food...
Read moreVery rarely does a restaurant hit every note. Gavel is a fantastic restaurant with a variety of dishes including some British ones. Many Malaysian restaurants and many British ones struggle to serve up hearty tasty British food, the Sunday roast here for example is not only the best one I've had in Malaysia but probably the best one I've had in the UK too except maybe my late grandfather's. The food here tastes homemade and all dishes even vegetable sides are done justice instead of being chucked in to pad out the meal. All the ingredients taste high quality especially the meat cuts and the portions are generous. The food here is in my opinion underpriced considering the quality and import costs of some of the ingredients. The staff are welcoming and the lady boss takes an active role supporting her staff, welcoming patrons and maintaining food quality. The customer service here is great. They also serve great drinks, I particularly like the unique flavoured ciders but even the non alcoholic drinks are delicious, not overly sweet or syrup water like some restaurants serve. I love the 'Super boi' which really takes asam boi to a new level. Finally the decor is also attractive, cosy, clean and comfortable with a contemporary style, the seats are comfortable and the bathroom is immaculate. Overall a 10/10...
Read moreI had an incredible meal at this restaurant! Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and bursting with flavor.
Crispy Fries & Sliders: The fries were thick-cut, crispy on the outside, and soft inside—perfectly cooked! The sliders were a delight, with a crunchy filling, soft buns, and a creamy sauce that tied everything together beautifully.
Grilled Whole Seabass Fish: Absolutely delicious! The fish was grilled to perfection—crispy skin with tender, flaky meat. The sautéed bell peppers added a wonderful depth of flavor, and the herbed potatoes with fresh broccoli were the perfect sides.
Gourmet Pizza with Salmon & Arugula: One of the best pizzas I’ve had! The wood-fired crust was crispy and slightly charred, giving it a great rustic texture. The toppings were fresh and flavorful—smoky salmon, tangy sundried tomatoes, and peppery arugula combined beautifully.
Craft Beers: A fantastic selection! The beers were cold, refreshing, and paired perfectly with the meal. I particularly enjoyed the unique flavors of Beerfarm and PaperKite craft beers.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with excellent service that made the dining experience even better. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for great food and drinks in a cozy setting!
