🇲🇾 A Magical Waterfall Hike Near KL | Enchanted Forest Park

Taman Eko-Rimba Kuala Lumpur (TERKL) or Kuala Lumpur Forest Eco Park is located in the city center. It is located on a hill. It has two entrances: 1.) from the KL Tower side (upper level); 2.) from the intersection of two streets: Jalan Bukit Nanas and Jalan Raja Chulan (lower level). On Google Maps, this second gate is right next to the place marked as "Galeri Interaktif NRE" (it is the park information center with a little gallery). During my hike, I also came across a third entrance that looked like it had been closed for a long time. I entered the park through the "lower" entrance. It can be reached from the Masjid Jamek LRT station (about a 20-minute walk). Some people start from the top and go down. In my opinion, the trails are not very demanding. It took me about 2 hours to complete all of them (I was moving faster rather than slower :-) ) I was completely wet at the end. :-) The entrance fee for foreigners is MYR 40, children (6-12) - MYR 5.00, children (under 6) can enter for free. The hike was very interesting. I visited it in September.

Akin to a small island of lush tropical jungle in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, for a hiking enthusiast this place reveals glimpses of a typical hike into a tropical forest in Malaysia albeit a very brief one. Went there with my wife, I think minus the photoshooting we spent less than 30 minutes there. The entrance to Bukit Nanas was close to our hotel during our excursion but safe to say you’ll likely will be spending an one hour here, which makes it perfect for a morning walk. The track is very similar to most tropical forest in Malaysia and you wouldn’t be amiss if you thought you are going for a proper hike during the start! Rest assured it’s a very easy hike, opt for the canopy walk for more picturesque - to be honest I never saw anyone using the ground walk, haha. Surprisingly, one of the exits/entrance is into the front of KL Tower, so imagine our bewilderment when suddenly out of the forest you arrived to the front of KL Tower! The information centre was close during our visit which is very unfortunate. It could have been more.

The park is in dire need of refurbishment and maintenance and is totally underinvested. The signposts and trails markings are non existent, many paths lead to nowhere, the path structure is not well maintained with many broken parts so it's easy to trip, it's super easy to get lost, many gates are closed on the weekend which is a joke considering most people come here on the weekend I assume. One trail was closed due to a landslide and there was only a sign in Malay notifying about it with no tape to cordon off the entrance. If you don't speak Malay you can easily venture into a closed trail. There are no water fountains provided nor vending machines, the only place to get water is next to the only open entrance near KL tower. It is even difficult to find entrance to this place and I had to ask 2 different people on the way to the KL tower how to get to the park. Once you enter it, you have to exit the same way, as the gate on the other side is closed on the weekends. So difficult to install an automatic turnstile exit if you can't afford to put a person at the gate? With all this, paying RM 40 for entrance is a total joke. The place is in total ruin and I have no idea where all this money for entrance fee is going, probably being pocketed. Don't waste your time and money on this place. Unfortunately the state of the park is a reflection of general state of things and the level of organisation and maintenance in this country.

Not recommended for visit regardless of whether you are a local or a foreigner like me. I am from Australia and the botanical gardens local to my area are much well maintained and obviously free of charge. If this Eco park was within 15-20min drive from my place and the entrance was free of charge then I may have recommended it but it’s definitely not worth RM10 the Malaysians pay nor it’s worth the ridiculously high RM40 the overseas people pay. At the time of my visit which was around 11am during the day the information centre and art gallery was closed. There is quite a bit of stairs all around with a few trip hazards here and there. You can have the smoke from cigarettes almost to every corner of the park which is mostly from the maintenance staff who are mostly standing or sitting around and smoking cigarettes. The park is much smaller than what it actually looks like on the map. On the canopy walk most of the bolts to the canopy which are supporting the bridges / ropes are corroded. There is almost little to no information available on the information boards and it’s mostly QR codes around that you need to scan to find out more information and read stuff on your phone. Overall the park isn’t really well maintained and I would have rated it as an average park if it had free entrance and was local to my area.. it’s definitely not a tourist spot !

My second visit back to KL Forest Eco Park. Canopy walk is still the most appealing attraction here but quite disappointed with the upkeep of the plants and certain areas. Areas like orchid farm and fern house should be renamed because there are no longer orchids and ferns. Disappointed that Herbal Garden is barricaded from entry. I would expect the management would have more than sufficient time to refurnish the place to impress and accept visitors again given the long periods of lockdown. Remember to explore the other walking trails. Realized that are actually many trails that I have missed in my first visit. Note on parking for visitors. There are two carpark lots for visitors. (1) KL Tower (ParkSafe @ KL Tower); which you will see after you drive upwards the hill past the KL Tower entrance. You will drive past a tool booth-like ticketing booth. Rates are RM4 first hour and RM3 subsequent. (2) Outdoor car park opposite Menara Ample West (ParkSafe @ Jalan Puncak); public parking lot with oddly more expensive rates than the official KL Tower car park.
